German enjoys trade surplus with the rest of the world, including China. Curbing imports will only lead to the opposite. The irony is that of all the major economies, the country with the heaviest reliance on export is actually Germany.

You can think it in this way. China can make Germany important or unimportant. China is the biggest comsumer of cars and many machinary products. It will be a huge hit to Germany economy if China stop buying these stuff. Also China can make other European countries as the alternative suppliers. “EU is one” is just lip service. Other EU countries will be happy to take Germany's shares. Germany will lose its role in EU as big brother.

An economically and politically unimportant Germany. That what we can see if it loses China.

I keep forgetting China has been out of the main world loop up until 1980 so you don't have any reference.

Europe and the US have already gone through all this numerous times during past wars. This is nothing new. Trump is just reminding them of what happened during the past cutoffs.

The problem is. The US and many other countries have been used to China's existence. They have been enjoying Chna's existence. China makes most things affordable, available and acceptable. It is not because Chinese workers are less paid. But because Chinese government is far sighted and efficient. Because Chinese workers are smart, diciplined and industrious. No other countries can play China's role in the supply chain.

Will the world go back to no-China time? I doubt that. As Chinese idiom goes: 由俭入奢易，由奢入俭难. Which means it is easy for people to accept better living standard, but very hard to go back once they are used to it.

China has many shortcomings, which most Chinese members here admitted. That's why China government push hard on a good relationship with Germany.

Wise leaders from Germany, like Merkel, Schröder, Kohl and Schmidt knew very well that how indispensable China is, and they knew what's the best interest of Germany.

Germany suffered a great loss during WW2, they are divided by West Germany and East Germany, chained by US and Soviet respectively. This suffering gave Germany a big lesson, don't provoke the elephant you can't take.

Also, Germany has a cooler culture, they rise in past 2 decades. Germany wasn't on par with France during the Cold War, a dwarf politically, and militarily, but a giant economically. Now, Germany has surpassed France within EU significantly.

But on the world stage, Germany is still far inferior to Great Powers, like China, US and Russia. Germany is still chained down by US, it's not a sovereignty country, better than Japan, but much worse than France.

On world stage, China, Russia, and US has the free will to do things.

1. Russia has full food/energy self-sufficiency. Highest nuke deterrence.
2. China is embedded deeply into the world supply chain, and full food self-sufficiency, full electricity self-sufficiency, half oil self-sufficiency, nuke deterrence for second strike.
3. US is number one in the Pecking Order. Full food/energy self-sufficiency. Highest nuke deterrence.

What leverage Germany has over China? Sanction China like US did to China? Cut trade? Ban technology? China has enough measures to retaliate.

Germany doesn't have food/energy self-sufficiency. No nuke deterrence at all. Germany is a strong country, but weakness is obvious during turmoil.

German have better life quality over Chinese, we all knew it. But it doesn't mean Germany is a strong country on the world stage. Influence of Germany is very limited within EU.

Now the coalition of 3 parities formed the Germany government, it's very fragile. We all knew it. The Greens party is not friendly towards China, but don't forget Merkel is not friendly to China at the beginning either. Merkel even met Dalai Lama, which irritated the Chinese. But China tamed Germany very quickly.
