China intents to impose sanctions against the American weapons suppliers to Taiwan. The statement was made by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Ministry has already voiced a vigorous protest to the agreement worth $1.83 billion and delivered a note to the US Chargé d'Affaires.

Mikhail Karpov, Associate Professor at the School of Asian Studies, Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, Higher School of Economics:

'I believe that these sanctions will have minor consequences. These sanctions against the US are not quite serious. I mean just technically, the content. In fact, the US works very carefully with Taiwan, it's not going to make China rather angry. Thus, some deals are taking place, the Americans will not let Taiwan alone for sure. But it is difficult to say which will be the real volume of the American cooperation with Taiwan. There will be held elections in January and there are serious prerequisites for the Democratic Progressive Party coming into power. And there really occurs a situation of uncertainty. The China-Taiwan relations will start freezing for sure, and the question is which stance the US will take up. Obama is a good president. I've always said that concerning the foreign policies, Obama may be the second president after "Bush the Elder" who uses his noodle. But he will also leave. And a lot of things may be started at the end of 2016. I do not believe that the Americans will let Taiwan alone in any case.'

Sanctions are not a good response on American defence companies because they don't do business with China.

1. China should kick out all American NGOs out of China, Hong Kong and Macau. NGOs are there to cause trouble to China like the Hong Kong student protests. Use this weapons deal to retaliate by closing down ALL American NGOs.

2. Ban GPS in the Chinese market and let Beidou fill the vacuum. Only way to make Beidou the dominant navigation system in the Chinese market is to protect it from competition like GPS. China did it in the Internet sector and it worked very well with many Chinese Internet companies emerging thus making sure China don't have to rely on American Internet companies.

China should use this Taiwan weapons sale to help Chinese companies win over market share from American companies in various sectors in China. China can justify it as retaliation for the weapons deal but its real goal is to benefit Chinese companies.

China can use this crisis perfectly just like its using the SCS crisis to militarise the islands and project PLA air power.

Never let a crisis go to waste.

Well yea, America's hit list on Chinese military officials are about as useful as Ben Carson as president, but you still do it.

Even though I don't know the specific companies involved, I assuming that sanctions aren't necessarily meaning China will stop buying weapons from USA, as we all know that hasn't happened in a long time.

Don't forget that China is the biggest player in component and spare parts supply chain, even for US military contractors. China can withhold components, chips or materials, like rare earth metals, that these company need. Also, many US defense contractors, like Boeing, also have commercial civilian parts of their business, which China can target by either disrupting supply chain or restricting access to Chinese market.

The sanctions aren't necessarily going to hurt US or these companies much but it is a sign of times that China can and will do these kinds of things now. China doesn't need Western companies in their country for technological know-how anymore, so aren't afraid to ruffle US corporate feathers. And like Beido2020 mentioned above, it could clear the way for domestic Chinese companies to fill any void left by sanctioned US companies.

USA is learning that you can't spit in China's face now without some kind of retaliation. This message is not only for the US. Countries like Vietnam, Philippines and Japan take note. China isn't afraid of your mighty Master, so imagine what China will do to you should you try to disrespect China.
