China sends missiles to contested South China Sea island: Fox News

I see, I would appreciate an academic product of this legion then endorsing such a position. I don't read Japanese but AFAIK there isn't any body of work by prominent Japanese strategists advocating for such a drastic realignment. Infact some may even consider such an innovative viewpoint to be treasonous.

Because you are not active in Japanese academic circles nor are involved in security publications. Contrary to your very superficial understanding of Japanese political economy, there is a great wave of proponents in integration with China , and in opposition of the US system. This is one of the reasons why , in Japan, there has been such a strong opposition to even the TPP and further security cooperation with Washington. On reality, the JSDF is actually decreasing the size of Japanese cooperation with US , but the US continues to publish such cooperation (although decreased in nature) as to retain some kind of relevance on a soon to be ended MDT. Japan is slowly , gradually, and responsibly assuming more control and the United States seems to be in a position where she is discerning acquiescence.

Funny you are using Tyhpoon Haiyan to praise the Chinese Government effort on Humanitarian works. Then this headline does not make a good reading I guess. Or is it some sort of Western Conspiracy coming out of the western imperialist, I supposed?

You're quoting a western publication, my friend. A western liberal publication apparatus, to be exact.

Enough said.

:)

I am not quoting a western Publication, I am quoting a fact. China donated 1.6 millions as per Chinese government officially announced. As per Chinese State TV (CCTV news) reports

While IKEA donated 2.7 millions alone. So what say this??

Even Coca-Cola gave more, at 2.4 millions.....

Amount matters not. The point is that they offered and they delivered. What you are arguing about is actually rather insulting, dude.

In our view point, counting a donation and using it as a means to politicize is actually an act of unrighteousness. A gift is a gift.

To the Thousands of Filipinos who benefited from Chinese medical aid --- that was everything. Your trying to politicize the amount given or even lack of acknowledged their medical relief deployment is actually an insult to the people in Leyte and Samar.

It is even common knowledge that the regionalism in Philippines meant that the Director of Local Government and Interior, Mar Roxas, even tried to stem and prevent aid from Manila to Tacloban due to regional politic and friction with the mayor of Tacloban, who was actually a proponent and supporter of the Marcoses. The fact that even Manila politicians actively prevented aid to their own calamity hit city says something. The Chinese did not do so, and without question or even without request, sent her FLEET HOSPITAL SHIP packed with life saving resources to Tacloban.

That is commendable on their part.

The Swedish furniture chain Ikea is giving more financial aid to the Philippines than China following the category 5 typhoon that hit the country last week.

The world's second-largest economy has pledged less than $2m in cash and materials, compared to $20m provided by the United States, which also launched a massive military-driven rescue operation that includes an aircraft carrier.

Another Chinese rival, Japan, has pledged $10m and offered to send troops, ships and planes. Australia is giving $28m, and even Ikea's offer of $2.7m through its charitable foundation beats that of China.

China's reluctance to give more, driven by a row with Manila over overlapping claims in the South China Sea, dents its global image at a time when it is vying with Washington for regional influence.

"China has missed an excellent opportunity to show itself as a responsible power and to generate goodwill," said Zheng Yongnian, a China politics expert at the National University of Singapore. "They still lack strategic thinking."

The decline of American influence in Asia, with China filling the vacuum, has been predicted for years. Asian nations have become increasingly dependent on China's booming economy to purchase their exports, and Chinese companies are increasingly providers of investment and employment.

Yet China lags far behind the US in soft power, the winning of hearts and minds through culture, education and other non-traditional forms of diplomacy, of which emergency assistance is a major component.

Despite Chinese academics' frequent promotion of soft power, Chinese leaders don't really get it, said Zheng. Instead, they continue to rely on the levers of old-fashioned major-nation diplomacy based on economic and military might. "They still think they can get their way through coercion," Zheng said.

China's donations to Philippines include $100,000 each from the government and the Chinese Red Cross, and it is sending an additional $1.64m worth of tents, blankets and other goods.

Though Beijing's territorial claims overlap with Vietnam and others, it has singled out the Philippines, apparently because of Manila's energetic assertions of its own claims. Beijing was enraged by Manila's decision to send the dispute to international arbitration and constantly rails against its close military alliance with the US.

China's generosity with the Philippines hasn't entirely dried up. It pledged $80,000 to the Philippines last month following a major earthquake there, in addition to this week's pledges. And the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, expressed his sympathy to his Philippine counterpart, Benigno Aquino, in the latest disaster, although a five full days later and without mentioning assistance.

Zhu Feng, an international relations expert at Peking University, said the amount donated "reflects the political deadlock, if not outright hostility, between the two countries. The political atmosphere is the biggest influence."

An additional factor could be that China is a relative newcomer to overseas disaster relief. The country sent tents and a medical mission to the hardest-hit Aceh province in Indonesia after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, and government and public donations were in the millions of dollars.

Since then, China's participation has been mainly limited to assisting its close ally Pakistan with flood and earthquake relief and some help to foreign nationals fleeing Libya during an unprecedented mission to evacuate 30,000 of its citizens from the war-torn nation.

Initially, the Chinese aid response is worth to the equivalent to $100k and only increased it and brought a hospital ship after China was criticized.

Using this incident to praise the CCP is insulting.

It doesn't matter whether there is a Western bias or none, the fact IS that China initially gave low amount of aid and.was only forced to raise their aid after criticism, and when they did, many countries were active in Tacloban.

China had made her first impression in giving $100k initial aid and only increased it when criticisms kicked in.

You need to say that to yourselves first before you can dream big on getting Australia and New Zealand in line with Chinese Policy, do you even know how many people in Australia hated the Chinese?

Get rid of the US troop in Japan first, then talk big, not when you have your own country "occupied" by a foreign entity, and then you say something like that, or, alternative, why stop at Australia and New Zealand? Why not try to get rid of the US influence in Canada and Mexico?? If your sole purpose is to talk big??

And lol at what you think at Indonesia

@madokafc seems like someone trying to tilt the Indo-Aussie relationship off balance. What you say mate?

Indonesia-Australia have love-hate relationships, they support us during our independence war we will never forget that. They condemn us during our misplaced treatment against Timoresse, we will never forget that too. But the best thing Australia and Indonesia had is the existence of each other as Indonesia and Australia deeply entrenched and needed for each other in the case of worst, like the invasion from the North. Australia thinking they need Indonesia as buffer for their future defense, Indonesia thinking we need them to support us and a place to fallback in the case of the most worst case scenario. All in all, we need each other

While you are at it, why not donate 10,000 coffins to the victim? How appropriate is that??

I did not start this thread glorified the only can be described as "Merger" aid to the people of Philippine, send a Hospital Ship, big deal, what you r 250 bedder can do when people need food, water, and money.

The Aid amount do tell a different between a generous country and a country that's doing a lip service and not being sincere. If I just lost my home and you give me $100 with the caption saying Better this or nothing. You know what will I do to you? I will fold your 100 dollar bills and shove it up your behind....

In America, we have a phase for it

It comes in a dollar short, and a day late. Which is best used to describe the Chinese "so-called" humanitarian effort in Tacloban.

Well, unlike what the man said.

The size of aide do matter. I remember I read some article putting the reaction of China after Haiyan is the corresponding reaction to their foreign policy, I remember China offer a lot more to the 2004 tsunami in Indonesia a few years before Haiyan to a tune of 60 millions dollars. But I remember quite distinctively the Chinese aid in Japanese 2011 tsunami is virtually non-existence. It was like $100,000 and a SAR Team.

I guess they have a price with different country, and for them, Philippine is worth 1.7 millions with a Hospital Ship, so I think you guys are already better off than the Japanese...

, sent US$167,000 in aid along with a 15-member rescue team which left Beijing on Sunday, 13 March 2011,[21] with an additional pledge of RMB 30 million Chinese yuan (US$4.57 million) of humanitarian supplies announced by China's Ministry of Commerce the following day.[22] The Chinese government decided to donate 20,000 tons of fuel consisting of 10,000 tons of gasoline and 10,000 tons of diesel.[23] The Chinese navy hospital ship Peace Ark was standing by to assist whilst awaiting approval from Japan, but Japan declined the offer.[24][25] The northeastern Chinese city of Changchun, a sister city of Sendai, sent 10 tonnes of drinking water to Japan. The provincial government of Jilin also said it will donate 100,000 U.S. dollars to the Miyagi prefecture government while the municipal government of Changchun, capital of Jilin, pledged 500,000 Renminbi to the municipal government of Sendai.[26]A super-sized 62-meter long mechanized water-pump arm was donated by China's Sany group, along with an accompanying team of 5 engineers and consultants destined for the effort to quell the overheating and radiation problems of the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant on 23 March 2011.

The Philippine government made ready to deploy a joint rescue mission composed of 41 members from three of its best search and rescue teams. It was to be complemented by a Philippine Air Force C-130 cargo plane and its crew. The Philippine Government also donated US$10 million to Japan.[67][68] A 2-man team has been sent in advance to assess the situation.[69] Due to the overwhelming response by the global community its search and rescue teams were not deployed. Instead it offered relief goods with the AFP's six-man advance team being in charge of distribution.

Still, his sudden change is very surprising. While he already had shown disdain towards American foreign policy sometime before, his recent comments indicates that he is now Anti-American, and possibly holds disdain towards people who are not aligned with CCP China, given his comments towards some Vietnamese. I will no longer be surprised if he also begins to show disdain to us Filipinos here save for two.
