I must say that the Ministry of Family Planning has been consistently wrong in its predictions on births. All their recent predictions have been way off the mark!

In fact it is time to do the reverse. Urban couples will need to be encouraged to have more babies. The trends are right now very worrying for chinese birth rates, because they are declining at a much faster rate than almost anyone thought before. The ministry in fact was predicting upto 20 million births and continuous increase in births for some years.

Please don't. Let nature do its magic. Chinese were encouraged before, then discouraged, then restricted, then less restricted, ... All these "clever" plannings backfired.

I leave that to individual person to decide for himself. That is what I meant by "not running against nature". After all, usually people who suggest others to do one way or the other aren't held accountable for the results that the others endure.

With the expansion of economy development, the increase of family spending, and increase of education of the people (specially women) in the country, you can expect that the birth rates will be decline. The reason is that because in order to live in decent life, you have to work more than before. And not only that, but both husband and wife also have to work to improve the family lifestyle. This problem give a result that the families in modern urban society don't have enough time to raise a baby. Maybe they can sacrifice their time to raise a child, but not two, or three, of four.

It's different if the country is quite backward, and the education of the women are low; or in a society where there is no equality between men and women. In a situation like that, you can expect more birth rates in the country.

The problem with low births stem from the fact that it is too expensive to raise children in China nowadays, especially in cities. Unless the government encourages second births (by giving monetary incentives) the birthrate decline will continue.

To have more people is easy, as the case in China. To control the fast growing population is hard, especially when you are still dirt poor, as the case in India.

You are creating a society where woman need to work and have a career.

Then you ask them to have more children.

It doesn't fit in any sane and responsible people logic.

A successful country always has low birth rate. A failure country will have a high birth rate. There are many statistics to back this theory.

China is on the right path to glory.
