China’s New Naval Electronic Surveillance Ship Launched in Shanghai

it is all about money, when the Chinese market becomes larger than the US one, tell me why companies should put their best technical breakthrough in the US?

Because the companies that has technologies are US companies. They are require by US law to keep certain defence technology in the US. Because of much higher wages in the US, talents are still coming to US. This would be true until average wage in China catch up to US. I'm not saying that China will never catch or surpass US in technology. What I'm saying is that China catch up to US in GDP or even double the US in GDP doesn't mean that domestic technology in China will catch up to US. As of now, there is no projection on when that is going to happen.

.
150 years ago it was the German scientists and engineers pulling the world ahead, but the US caught up. Same story, another age.

But there are two world war to cause great disruption. If things progress as it is right now, I do not see the end of US technological dominance. I'm not saying that it will never happen, but its not in the horizen in a way that China's GDP will surpass US GDP.

.
when china's gdp equals that of the us, the us will still have the advantage in science and technology in general but not in every aspect. China after all generates far more engineers and scientists than the us, and with the economic support(no money no science), the two countries' technology gap will be significantly reduced.
When china's gdp equals 2 or 3 times of the us's, china may finally catch up the us in the technology field, but that will be a more than 50 years' story and countries such as india will catch up too.

That is the point I tried to make all along. There is still a long way before China can catch US in technology, especially defence.

Money is something but not everything. When PRC was just established, there was not much money, but people trained in West poured back into China. Today’s China is much richer, yet there are more people heading towards US than the other way around.

In general, people, when they have money, they then want law and order, they want faire opportunities, they want fair competition, they want amicable environment to develop themselves: they don’t like an environment where “fishers” such as those in Shanghai are rampant, they hate places where officials are corrupted and private properties are not protected, where hard earned copy rights/inventions can be pillaged without punishment. Those places are for proletariats who has nothing to loose but the shackles on their limbs.

Yes, money is a necessary condition for law and order, but it is not a sufficient condition.

Money may buy brain, but can't buy heart.

China will just buy weapons made by China, use Renminbi, not US dollars. Many Chinese will get a job in the military industry. The whole Chinese industry will be benifit from the new technology researched by the military, like Project Apollo. The advanced weapon made by China can also sell to foreign countries to earn dollars... It's just a stimulus policy like infrastructure or transportation construction.

that is not the point dear....
the point is:

The thing that leads countries to disaster is Arms race....
u are indulging in one now with US.... all ur money, a disproportionate amount of it is going/will go into defence only.... this will mean slower growth in other parameters.....and that could be really harmful for a developing country which has rampant poverty through out... where ppl dont have food to eat.... china is just a devloping country and a very poor one as compared to the developed countries.....China is not a developned country dear....so this is extravagant spending at the cost of its ppl.... which China can ill afford....or it can do so at its own peril....

Yes...Please...Oh...Please...Oh...Please send this ship over to our side of the world. Keep in mind that ELINT is a two-way street. Not only that, we emit more than China does, and that mean cover for what we can learn FROM observing this ship. Think twice before making this kind of comment.

I agree that ELINT is a double-edged sword. But if the chinese ELINT just passively collects US signals, how would the US ever collect chinese signals?
Plus, ELINT is not a form of direct confrontation, the US can't say any thing about it since they do intelligence gathering the South China Sea all the time.:azn:

True, but the news would be more damaging than what US can actually do to stop China from deploying its ships by US coast. As of now, China should build up its economy, which its successfully doing.

Forgive me but I thought that India is more backward and poor as compare to China. But by looking at your post, it appear that India is such an technologically advanced country that someone from India can lecture about China.

How to reduce poverty? We just can't give them food for long. They'd better have a job and earn money. Developing the military industry in China can provide lots of jobs and expand domestic demand! It's good way of reducing poverty! We shoud purchase weapons indigenously, not from foreign country.

ELINT is not merely passive. You can have a 'provocation' transmission. You can make physical 'incursion' or approaches territorial boundaries and collect electronic responses. It does not matter if the target is at land or floating at sea. Even the lack of any electronic responses can imply certain capabilities and/or intentions. But all crafts, air or seaborne, wants to be alerted of approaching objects and to date, radar remains the best detector mechanism. So collecting the sweep patterns and freqs of this ship can tell US a lot of its capabilities. Photos of the ship's antennas and their locations on the ship's structures can tell US its collection capabilities.

The US is a highly industrialized country, arguably the most in the world, and that mean the US military have a lot of electronic cover, junks like radio and television transmissions, that we can use to mask our 'provocation' transmissions and collect the ship's responses. Or none at all. We can use over-the-horizon radar transmissions as one such 'provocation' transmission and have a sub record this ship's electronic responses when it detect those radar transmissions. The one very important item is receiver sensitivity. The less sensitive the hardware, the shorter in distance between the two players when there are responses, and that is very telling of one side's technology level.

Diffraction loss => Diffraction <= Is extremely important in tactical ELINT for both sides. Geographical features are always open for exploitations to gain advantages in combat, so knowing how to lure an adversary into an electronically disadvantageous position due to terrain is valuable knowledge. Beside receiver sensitivity, other important hardware related items are freq and bearing azimuth coverage, beamwidth and INSTANTANEOUS bandwidth. If a potential war adversary is capable of frequency agility, there is a crucial need to have wide bandwidth capability, in transmit and receive, and to have that capability as rapid as possible, to collect his transmissions, else you would lose the freqs he is capable of moving into.

The US is a consumate pro in EW at all levels, from the SR-71's missions over Soviet territory to ground collectors. I used to ruck about 100 kg of electronic junk to collect an airbase's electronic data recorded on magnetic tapes. We trained ROK Marines on signal exploitations. We buried ourselves in the snow outside of Osan and Kunsan airbases and collect electronic emissions, from radars to handheld radios, called 'bricks', used by maintenance to keep the aircrafts flying. No one eat and we had what the kids called 'energy drinks' today. We pissed in ourselves and make sure the liquid is covered by our bodies to deny the defenders any IR signatures. Generators are emitters. So do jet engines. All are unique. At such close proximity, it is possible to create a very accurate combat capability profile of an airbase f.rom ELINT. I advise you temper your enthusiasm upon considering this potential war adversary.

Plus, ELINT is not a form of direct confrontation, the US can't say any thing about it since they do intelligence gathering the South China Sea all the time.:azn:
We do not want to have any kind of 'confrontation' as long as this ship remain outside territorial waters. But we do encourage the PLAN to send it our way for US to scope it over.

The arms development in India is defintely worsen poverty in India. The Indian government spend all those money and effort on developing a tank and airplane that at the end the Indian military won't want to buy. Why spend money on development if its not going to be mass produced. Why is India buying all those T-90s and MRCA instead of buying domestic and provide jobs to the people? Its either the corruption of the politician or bad engineers. In any case, the real loser are the people of India, especially the backward cast groups.

mate, it is from a developing country to a developing country....
China is just a developing country...its ppl are very poor and still it doesnt see sense in providing them basic facilities of life... food, clothing and home....
provide these first and raise standard of your ppl to a decent level first which will take decades and then China should think of going into Arms race with SuperPower like US..
