The rollout ceremony of first of four Chinese ZDK-03 airborne warning and control systems (AWACS) aircrafts for the Pakistan Air Force was held at Hanzhong in China today. The rollout coincided with President Asif Ali Zardari's visit to China – his sixth since assuming the position in 2008.

PAF chief Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman was the chief guest at the ceremony, which was attended by the Commander of the PLA Air Force and other military and civil officials of China.

The PAF signed a contract in 2008 with China Electronics Technology Group Corporation for the joint development of four ZDK-03 AWACS aircraft configured to Pakistan's specifications.

The ZDK-03 is an advanced AWACS with sophisticated integrated sensors and communications suite, PAF said in a statement.

In his speech at the rollout, Air Chief Marshal Suleman described the event as "another milestone in the exemplary history of cooperation between Pakistan and China”.

This AWACS will strengthen the PAF's capabilities to maintain "peace with honour in the region", he said.

The AWACS is part of PAF's overall strategy of transforming itself into a "lean and technologically advanced air force", Suleman said.

The PAF will not spare any effort to make the defence of the country impregnable, he added.

CETC Chairman Wang Zhigang said the induction of the AWACS by the PAF will have a "positive impact on regional stability, peace and prosperity as well as on the close bond between the two military forces and two countries".

The PAF has also received two of four Saab-2000 AWACs aircraft ordered from Sweden.

The remaining two aircraft equipped with the Erieye radar system are expected to be delivered later this year.

The Chinese aircraft is powered by four turboprop engines and has a greater range than offered by the Saab Microwave Systems Erieye, the sources say.

Little is known about the performance of the radar system fitted on the new Y-8 AEW. It was estimated that the aircraft may be comparable to the U.S. E-2C Hawkeye in terms of performance and capabilities.

The Radar is AESA

Can it take missiles etc ?? This is wt I need to know

Can it take missiles etc ?? This is wt I need to know

Its main operational function is to give UPDATE analysis to ground command center and get appropriate # of fighters in air to counter any incoming attack.

And it also protect you from missiles flying in and trying to sneak attack national interest

So it really does not need have missiles such planes are normally escorted by 3-5 planes in time of war which protect it during operations

With out these planes the F16/Thunders/J10B might have less information on planes
but with these planes we will know exactly where the planes are going , how many of these planes are , and each target can be tracked all time what its doing ...

The radar has certain limitations these AWACs don't have such limitation and it gives you a greater VISION over the air space you intend to guard, and sometimes having a 20-30 min advance knowledge can prevent a first STRIKE on your bases or point of intrest.

These AWACs would work well with our JF17 platform - and we will be able to get better situational awareness to pilots so they get GOOD picture of what they are up against and also they will know if anyother plane has fired any BVR missiles and if they get advance notice they will have better chance to avoid these incoming missiles with counter meassures

Physical radars are stuck in ground but these AWACS are flying in air so you can move your vision (deep) into enemy lines (enemy can be anyone not necessarily india)
