It was an unfortunate mistake on his part. As I said, official Japanese Government Position has already been forwarded to China's Foreign Ministry -- and had made a public clarification.

Let's agree to that.

I do not believe in the notion of "mistake" in the world of "high" diplomacy, my friend.

It seems more like a testing of waters.

He is the FM of Japan, not some low level bureaucrat. So, whatever he says represents Japan's official standing. Or, will be taken as such by the corresponding side.

To retreat from an earlier statement is the best one can do, but the harm is done.

Just a very untimely statement and I take it as intentional as I do not believe in slips of tongue in foreign diplomacy, but calculated moves -- two steps further, one step back.

Hence, in my opinion, China should accept the conciliatory statement but prepare/strategize according to the earlier one.

There is no agitation here, by the way. It is usual, anticipated response from the Chinese side. Any country would respond to such a high-level remark equally strongly, if not more.

Openly stand on support India territorial dispute is an idiotically move by japan high level official, since China will object any infra development in the dispute territory, by Japan statement of supporting Arunachal Pradeeh is part of India territory, China interpretation to the move as Japan and India allied each other to legitimized their territorial claim vs China, China won't sit back allow India to develop the region without a strong respond from China.

At long as Chinese gorverment state clairly that India hold the contested territories are invalided, then you should prepare for eventual take over even if use force is needed.. such as how we deal with south China sea (see the image) we're building up ourself in this area, any resistance is futile.
