China refutes reports of mistreated Vietnamese fishermen(Xinhua)08:08, March 02, 2012 BEIJING, March 1 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday refuted media reports accusing it of using force against Vietnamese fishermen in sea areas of the Xisha Islands during a law-enforcement process.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei used a regular press briefing to counter the allegations.

China reportedly used force against 11 Vietnamese fishermen on a vessel on Feb. 22 and prevented them from entering the waterway to avoid high winds.

Media reports also said these Vietnamese fishermen had been assaulted and robbed by the Chinese side.

Vietnamese Foreign Ministry spokesman Luong Thanh Nghi said on Thursday that China's action seriously infringed upon Vietnam's sovereignty and gravely threatened the lives and security of its fishermen.

Rejecting these media reports as inconsistent with the facts, Hong stressed that the Chinese side did not use force in the law-enforcement process and did not board the Vietnamese ship.

Hong reaffirmed that China has indisputable sovereignty over the Xisha Islands and its adjacent waters.

Chinese departments have recently expelled from China some Vietnamese ships committing fishing piracy in the waters of the Xisha Islands, he said, noting China's action is legitimate and lawful.

In the spirit of humanism, China has always offered rescue assistance to Vietnamese fishermen in real distress, and Vietnam has also expressed gratitude for this help, Hong added.

Hong requested the Vietnamese side respect China's sovereignty over the Xisha Islands and take effective measures to strengthen education and regulation of its fishermen, in a bid to stop illegal fishing operations and safeguard the China-Vietnam friendship.

VGP - A representative from the Vietnamese Foreign Ministry has met with representatives from the Chinese Embassy in Hà Nội to oppose the action of China, and ask China to refrain from similar wrongful actions and request compensation for the Vietnamese fishermen.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Lương Thanh Nghị made the remark in response to the media’s queries about Việt Nam’s reaction to an incident on February 22 when China used force to threaten 11 fishermen on a vessel from Quảng Ngãi province, preventing them from entering the Hoàng Sa Archipelago to avoid strong wind.
Việt Nam has indisputable sovereignty over the Hoàng Sa (Paracel) and Trường Sa (Spratly) archipelagos, the diplomat said.

The Chinese force is also reported to have assaulted the fisherman and to have tried to take their property.

“Vietnamese fishermen have moved freely in the territorial waters surrounding those two archipelagos for generations. They behaved in accordance with international laws, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982,” Mr. Nghị said.

According to the Spokesman, the above-mentioned action of China has seriously infringed upon the sovereignty and sovereign and jurisdiction rights of Việt Nam. It ran counter to the spirit of humanitarianism, gravely threatened the lives of Vietnamese fishermen and caused serious property losses to them./.

i think it would be wrong for chinese government to mistread vietnamese fishermen because china is responsible for the well being of all that live in its lebensraum, viets, japs, cattles, dogs, even vegetations. happily the government has come out and denied the report, so all is good.
