Peru's Las Bambas copper project signs concentrates rail transport deal

London (Platts)--10Jun2015/906 am EDT/1306 GMT

Minera Las Bambas has entered into a rail agreement with Perurail for the transportation of copper concentrates from the Las Bambas mine project, Australian parent company MMG said Wednesday.

The agreement with Perurail provides for the transportation of concentrates by rail from the Pillones transfer station to the Port of Matarani, a distance of around 295 km (183 miles).

The agreement is expected to begin on January 1, 2016, for a period of 15 years with an option to renew for a further 15 years, MMG said.

The estimated total consideration payable by Las Bambas for the provision of the rail services during the initial 15-year term is $489.3 million.

Platts Metals Alert is the metal and steel industry's leading real-time news and price service. With Metals Alert, you'll instantly learn about market changes -- giving you access to information you can use to boost your profits, cut your losses and save time.

When in operation, Las Bambas is expected to become one of the top three copper-producing mines in the world, with projected output of 400,000 mt/year of copper for at least the first five years and an estimated mine life of more than 20 years.

The mine is a joint-venture project between the operator MMG (62.5%) and wholly owned subsidiaries of each of China's Guoxin International Investment Co. (22.5%) and CITIC Metal Co. (15%).

MMG's majority shareholder is China Minmetals Nonferrous Metals Co., a subsidiary of China Minmetals Corp.

The current owners acquired the project from Glencore Xstrata in 2014.

The sale of the project was the result of the merger of Glencore and fellow Swiss mining group Xstrata -- in April 2013, China's Ministry of Commerce cleared the merger under certain conditions, including a commitment from Glencore to sell its post-merger ownership interest in Las Bambas to a buyer approved by the ministry before September 30, 2014.

Construction of Las Bambas continues to progress to plan, with the overall project 90% complete at the end of March 2015, MMG said Wednesday.

There will be at least 800km of subways and at least 3000km of high-speed railway to be opened in China in 2016. The demostic market is huge enough plus the export!

Let's wait for the Shanghai-Kunming HSR(Guizhou section) and Hefei-Fuzhou HSR in July, I'll take some photos of CRRC's new EMUs(electric multiple unit) operating on these new lines!

This is a tiny contract by Chinese standard and more deals of a similar nature will surely follow。

So I wish some of our over-excited Indian friends could calm down for the benefit of their general health。

Problem is, they get overexcited about everything. Even Modi's foreign visits make them excited.

MRT3 GM reports fabrication of new train cars in China on track

by Kris Bayos

May 18, 2015

Fabrication of the prototype unit of the brand new train cars for the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) 3 is nearing completion in China, according to the government.

MRT 3 General Manager Roman Buenafe said the fabrication of the prototype unit is on track and the winning supplier can meet the government’s deadline to deliver the prototype unit by August。

“Fabrication of the train body of the prototype unit will be finished by end of May,” said Buenafe, who visited the manufacturing plant of Dalian Locomotive and Rolling Stock Company (Dalian) in China last week.

With only three months left to fabricate and deliver the prototype unit, it is unclear when Dalian can finish the fabrication and transport the unit from China to the Philippines.

“Even from a technical perspective, I cannot estimate the progress they have made so far. But we were assured that the prototype will be in Manila by August,” he added.

Buenafe and other representatives of the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) are set to fly to Dalian again next month to conduct monthly progress inspection. Once the prototype unit runs in the MRT 3 system, Dalian will deliver the rest of the 48 brand new LRVs in monthly tranches over the succeeding 12 months.

Of the 72-car fleet of the MRT 3, between 42 to 54 cars are operational, according to Buenafe, as the rest are awaiting spare parts to operate again. Ideally, there should be 18 to 20 trains operating during peak hours but the existing maintenance provider has only been able to to deploy a maximum of 16 trains since January.

This underperformance has been the reason for the plummeting capacity of the MRT 3, which is originally designed to carry 350,000 passengers a day but actually ferries about 540,000 riders due to overloading. The MRT 3 runs along Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue daily from Taft Avenue to North Avenue.

Bengaluru: The state government is seriously considering introducing the Light Rapid Transport System (LRTS) to provide connectivity among metro stations in Bengaluru city. With citizens of Bengaluru not making adequate use of metro trains due to lack of connectivity from residential layouts to metro stations and bus stands, the government wants to introduce LRTS to link first, second and third phase metro stations.

Already, a project report has been prepared by Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation to have a 40 km mini train route in Bengaluru. A delegation from China’s Shandong International Economic and Technical Co-Operation Group Limited made a presentation on the metro rail and high speed train and also held discussion with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah here on Thursday.

The Chief Minister discussed three grade separators — Hebbal to Chalukya Circle via Central Silk Board (16 km); Goraguntepalya to KR Puram (21 km) and Jnanabharathi to Whitefield (27 km). This would ensure connectivity on all four sides of the city. The Chinese company had shown interest to take up this project on a Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis besides investing in all these three projects.

Construction of overpasses will reduce the travel time from Hebbal to Silk Board to 20 minutes, KR Puram to Goraguntepalya to 21 minutes and from Jnanabharathi to Whitefield to 40 minutes. Discussions were also held for building another corridor from BBMP circle to Hoskote.

Information and Infrastructure Minister R. Roshan Baig told mediapersons that the China-based company is known for construction of important highways, high speed trains and overpasses. The state government would be signing an agreement with that company at the Global Investors Meet(GIM) to be held in Bengaluru in November this year.

Six-lane express corridor

A project report is being prepared for a six-lane express corridor from Bengaluru-Mysuru in co-operation with a China-based company. The project cost is around Rs 6,500 crore and resources would be mobilised by Shandong International Economic and Technical Co-Operation Group Limited. This corridor would reduce journey time considerably.

High Speed train to link Chennai-Mysuru

Mr Roshan Baig said the CM discussed the high speed train project between Chennai and Mysuru via Bengaluru and a six-lane express corridor on the Bengaluru-Mysuru section. Already, the BJP led NDA government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had referred to a high speed train on the Chennai-Mysuru section via Bengaluru.

The meeting with the Chinese company was a prelude to this, he added. According to sources, there is a proposal to construct an overpass near Kengeri and Bidadi in view of sharp curves not suitable for high speed trains.

Recently, a team of officials inspected the existing railway track on Bengaluru-Mysuru section to find out feasibility of the high speed train.

Chennai metro rail in crisis, Russian firm abandons work

V Ayyappan, TNN | May 19, 2015, 03.02AM IST

CHENNAI: Work on the metro rail network in the city has run into trouble again. Building of tunnels under Anna Salai has come to a standstill after Mosmetrostroy, the Russian company which was working in a joint venture with Gammon India, abandoned work. This will further delay the project in which underground lines are supposed to be completed by end of this year.

The joint venture is building tunnels and underground stations from Government Estate to Saidapet in a contract worth 1,947crore. Mosmetrostroy was tasked with building tunnels because of its technological knowhow, while Gammon is building underground stations.

Sources said the Russian firm is suspected to have walked out of the project because of losses. The staff have abandoned the equipment and left. Contractors who supplied material and equipment to the company on Monday staged protest in front of the CMRL headquarters in Koyambedu demanding that the state government pay the 29 crore due to them from Mosmetrostroy.

A senior Chennai Metro Rail Ltd official said, "Around 70% of the tunnelling work has been completed on the stretch. We have issued notices to Mosmetrostroy and Gammon and have also contacted the Russian Consulate. Gammon may have to take up the work. We may have to ask other foreign companies involved in tunnel work for other contractors to chip in." :azn:

More than 90% of the work between Saidapet and Gemini was completed and the process of building twin tunnels from LIC to Thousand Lights was on.

Shanghai Urban Construction Group of China and Transtonnelstroy of Russia are working in the city for L&T and Afcon Infrastructure respectively. The Chinese company has completed its work.

India changes approach toward railways

Govt recognizes economic benefits from upgrading

Over the past year in office, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has put great emphasis on improving infrastructure and connectivity in India, with a special emphasis on railways.

He has sought to link his mission of reviving Indian railways with his foreign policy, and India is exploring possible collaborations with countries and regions in both Europe and Asia in a number of areas, including advanced technologies, upgrading of railway tracks and modernization of train stations. Various countries and regions have already come forward to provide assistance in these areas, including France, Japan, South Korea and China.

Comparisons are often made between the state of Indian railways and China's massive overhaul over the past decade. China's total railway network is 110,000 kilometers in length while India's is estimated at 65,000 kilometers, less than two-thirds of that of China. What is especially admirable is the size of China's high-speed rail network, which is estimated at 15,000 kilometers.

China's success in improving its railways has been achieved largely over the decade and a half since 1999, when the country built its first high-speed rail line. To begin with, high-speed trains were either imported or built through technology transfer agreements with foreign train makers, but Chinese engineers soon picked up the know-how and made their own trains. China's railway success has not just helped it enhance connectivity domestically, but also in connecting with other parts of Asia, as well as Africa and Europe. Rail connectivity is an important component of China's "One Belt, One Road" initiative and its foreign policy.

Modi is an admirer of the remarkable strides made by China in the sphere of railways, and he previously made a private visit to China during which he took a ride on a high-speed train just to learn about how it worked.

While Indian railways have had their fair share of problems, there is an increasing realization that to give support to economic growth, India needs to focus on embracing new technology, enhancing speed and improving the level of services for passengers.

One of Modi's pet projects is the bullet train from Ahmedabad to Mumbai. Currently, the journey takes eight hours, but this would be reduced to less than two hours by the bullet train. A Japanese team, which is undertaking a feasibility study, has stated that the ticket for this bullet train could be 2,800 rupees ($45), much less than for the Shanghai-Beijing high-speed train, which costs around $80.

While the bullet train is a long-term project, the government is already working on increasing the number of semi-high-speed trains that can travel at over 160 kilometers per hour. The semi-high-speed train from Delhi to Agra is likely to be inaugurated soon by Modi.

India has also realized the importance of assistance from the outside world. In August 2014, the Indian government allowed foreign direct investment into a few selected areas such as construction and maintenance of freight corridors, construction of bullet trains and reconstruction and maintenance of passenger terminals.

Railways are also an area in which India and China are likely to cooperate. During Modi's recent visit to China, this issue was given priority and a memorandum of understanding for cooperation on railways was signed. It is likely that China will assist India not just in infrastructure, but also in setting up railway universities. Apart from China, India is also likely to work closely with Japan.

There are certain key issues to bear in mind. First, a middle path needs to be found for the upgrading of Indian railways. There have been debates about privatization, and India is working at exploring synergies between the private and public sectors. Second, there is plenty of scope for progress in railways; after all, India has considerably improved its aviation infrastructure over the past decade. As well as the swanky airports in big cities, India has also been able to build impressive airports in second-tier cities and there is no reason why the success cannot be replicated in the rail sector, though of course it is likely to be a greater challenge.

It would be fair to say that cooperation in railways will help India not just domestically, but also in improving ties with other countries. By setting ambitious but attainable goals and clear timelines, and being open to assistance from a number of countries, the current Indian leadership is adopting the right approach.

- In the UK, a subway is an underground tunnel that people can walk through to get to the other side of a busy road. In the US, this is called an underpass. Asubway in the US is an underground railway in a city.
So when the train started moving underground its came to be known as subway...using the elevated structure to move trains within city is something new..but the name for same is still continued as few portions of the metros still run underground...
Ok....Thankyou Sir.......:-)

Oh Thankyou Sir.......:-)...... But why it is called "SUBWAY"....I mean a metro train can run on bridge also, then why only it is called "SUBWAY" Train..................o_O

Seriously? Still stuck on this after so many days? Why subway is called subway and why metro called metro ....? and soon you shall be on why Gurgaon intracity metro rail is called MRTS? Grow up

Regardless, the question still stands: why do orientals take European names? Raymond Chang, Richard Lee, James Tsui, etc.

Oh stop trolling ... Sikh folks have been anglicizing their names for decades ... how does it matter? In India you have thousands who are US folks who acquire the accent in 2 months of stay and then they have to tell everyone how and why they acquired the accent as no one understands the language if spoken in a flat English. Over here, I have spent 14 years outside India and yet have not been able to ingrain any accent into me and everyone understands what I have to say just perfectly ...

Good way to counter Gwader port.

Not clear .. how is this countering Gwadar? Anyways, we have made up plans for that but then that is another thread ...
