China must relax birth controls to defuse population time bomb, top think tank warns

Some salient points from the report:

  1. Ministry of Family Planning projections of annual births have always missed the mark.
  2. The workforce is on a rapid decline trajectory.
  3. People in cities are not having births due to high house prices, living expenditure etc.
  4. More needs to be done to encourage births.
  5. This is a report by Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. The country's top think tank almost.

China is heading straight toward stagnation here in a few decades. An old and declining population is not an enviable position. Not to mention the amount of money that will have to be spent on health and social programs. That means much less funding for defense and R&D accounts.

Buss, I don't want to compare anymore. Let time prove the different paths we took. :D

We had been heading for doom for the past 3 decades bhai.

International community should thank China for its population control, it's a big relief to our mother earth, China's economy will crash due to aging population in the future, not a threat any more to the sole superpower United States. India will reap its huge population dividend
to replace China as the new manufacture hub. The world will become more peaceful. :D

Didn't China just change the policy to two kids a year ago or so last year ?

Yup, a two child policy will still reduce the population but at a slower rate, to reduce the shocks of an aging population. China had never abandoned the policy of population reduction. It's just common sense. India will reaped the 'dividend' soon. I am a very critical observer of the environmental situation in Asia.

China would be stupid to allow Indians to immigrate. They want to reap the benefits without sacrificing.

Even if China government relax birth control policy, not many young people will heed it.

East Asians have low fertility -- not just China, but Singapore, Korea, Taiwan, HK and Japan. Ironically, East Asians are still one of the most socially conservative people, cherishing family values, and yearn to have children.

What causes the schism?

Traditionally, East Asian society are captive of landlord, who sit idly at home, extracting rents on the productive labor.

Many young people are saddled with astronomically amount of mortgages, and compounded with job insecurity.

This is a big price China has to pay, for learning from the "HK compradors -- aka western trained traitors", when Deng reform the country. East Asia need a Mao Zedong again.

Why not? We can always discuss these things out. Of course time will be the final judge. I agree.

This is strawmanning my argument. I have never said that population and median age are the only determinants of success. But they are certainly one of the most important.

Maybe you should make a dedicate China's population watch thread? @Bussard Ramjet

many people here like me have lost track

I did earlier. But the thread soon gets derailed by misrepresentations, and misleading statements and plain trolling. I think there should be system where moderating ability can be passed off to thread creators.

I don't think China wants to really start population decline just yet. The two child policy made the Family Planning Ministry to make forecasts that there could be up to 21 million births by 2020. But all have turned out to be false.

China would be stupid to allow Indians to immigrate. They want to reap the benefits without sacrificing.

This than is one reason which will further decline, if you refuse to admit and accomodate foreign talent when your own population is declining.

This is true. East Asian People have very low birth rates, all the more necessary for China to keep its declining TFR in check.

Here is what our old people are doing:

Then think about who have the time bomb...

This is classic misrepresentation through few data points.

You are comparing the relatively few people among your country still engaged productively in the economy, with the most downtrodden of our country.

You are comparing your best with our worst.

Not a meaningful comparison by any means.
