BEIJING: China Friday expressed condolences over the death of Indian doctor Dwarkanath Kotnis's Chinese wife Guo Qinglan.

Guo, a Chinese woman who married Kotnis in November 1941, died Thursday at the age of 96 in Dalian, a coastal city in northeast China's Liaoning province, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei said Guo spent her whole life promoting exchanges and cooperation between China and India.

Kotnis joined an Indian medical team and came to China in 1938 to help China fight against Japanese invasion. He joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 1942 and died the same year.

Kotnis sacrificed his youth and life for China's national salvation, Hong said, adding "we will always remember their (Guo and Kotnis's) important contributions".

Norman Bethune (白求恩)and Dwarkanath S. Kotnis(柯棣华)
Bethune, a Canadian, came to China in 1938 and helped the Chinese people in their fight against the Japanese aggressors by saving thousands of lives. In late 1939, he died of blood poisoning due to a finger prick he sustained during surgery.

Kotnis, an Indian, also came to China in 1938 as a volunteer doctor to aid China's anti-Japanese aggression effort. He died due to an illness in 1942.

NEVER FORGET

This great man is respected in both China and India.
His deeds should remind both Chinese and Indians that we once fought side by side against far worst enemies than each other.
Peace!

During his official visit to India several years ago Hu jingtao met Kotnis' family members. One or two of his sisters were still living at the time, all in their late 80s or perhaps early 90s.

Since India refused to gang up with the US against China, we have started seeing positive PR articles between India and China. Its amazing how public opinion can be manipulated slowly over time by such articles.Very subtle, but very strong.

P.S- My dear troll sinochallenged, seems you need to find another country to troll about

Our respect towards Dr. Dwarkanath S. Kotnis(柯棣华) has never changed since his death. It has nothing to do with China and India relation. Our respect is always there.

Just like our respect towards Dr. Norman Bethune, it is always there even Canada sent troops against us in Korean war.

Foreigners who joined China to fight off the Japanese invaders deserved to be remembered. People like the Flying Tigers who voluntarily came to China fought bravely against those murderers have a special place in Chinese history.

Rest in peace. The sacrifices of the foreign volunteers in an effort to combat Japanese imperialism will never be forgotten.
