China lodges protest after Obama approves Taiwan frigate sale

BEIJING – China said on Friday it had lodged a protest with the United States after President Barack Obama signed into law legislation authorising the sale of up to four Perry-class guided missile frigates to Taiwan.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said the Taiwan issue was one of Beijing’s core interests and remained the most important and most sensitive issue in Sino-U.S. ties.

“China firmly opposes the arms sale to Taiwan by the U.S. This position is resolute, clear and consistent,” Qin told a daily news briefing. “It is a crude interference of China’s internal affairs, damages China’s sovereignty and security interests and goes against the trend of peaceful development in cross-strait relations.

“China expresses strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to this and has lodged solemn representations with the United States both in Beijing and Washington. We reserve the right to take further action.”

Taiwan’s Defense Ministry, which plans initially to buy two of the ships, expressed its thanks to the United States for approving the sale, saying it was in keeping with the U.S. commitment in the Taiwan Relations Act to support Taiwanese security.

Under the Taiwan Relations Act, enacted in 1979 when Washington severed formal ties with the island in favour of recognizing the People’s Republic of China, the United States is obligated to help Taiwan defend itself.

U.S. weapons sales in recent years to Taiwan have attracted strong condemnation in China, but have not caused lasting damage to Beijing’s relations with either Washington or Taipei.

China and Taiwan have been ruled separately since defeated Nationalist forces fled to the island at the end of a civil war with the Communists in 1949. China has never renounced the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control.

While Taiwan and China have signed a series of landmark trade and economic agreements since 2008, political and military suspicions still run deep, especially in democratic Taiwan where many fear China’s true intentions. China’s military modernization has also been accompanied by a more assertive posture in its regional territorial disputes.

Joint Communique of the United States of America and the People's Republic of China
August 17, 1982

5. The United States Government attaches great importance to its relations with China, and reiterates that it has no intention of infringing on Chinese sovereignty and territorial integrity, or interfering in China's internal affairs, or pursuing a policy of "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan." The United States Government understands and appreciates the Chinese policy of striving for a peaceful resolution of the Taiwan question as indicated in China's Message to Compatriots in Taiwan issued on January 1, 1979 and the Nine-Point Proposal put forward by China on September 30, 1981. The new situation which has emerged with regard to the Taiwan question also provides favorable conditions for the settlement of United States - China differences over United States arms sales to Taiwan.

6. Having in mind the foregoing statements of both sides, the United States Government states that it does not seek to carry out a long-term policy of arms sales to Taiwan, that its arms sales to Taiwan will not exceed, either in qualitative or in quantitative terms, the level of those supplied in recent years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the United States and China, and that it intends gradually to reduce its sale of arms to Taiwan, leading, over a period of time, to a final resolution. In so stating, the United States acknowledges China's consistent position regarding the thorough settlement of this issue.

What does it say about chinese aircrafts doing loops around our aircraft in international airspace?

A communique is different from a signed treaty. The moment you stop the stealing, hacking and overt aggressive behaviour towards us and our NATO allies, I'm sure things can clam down.

That's selling a sense of security only. And at that, very pricey.

In 1 year everybody will forget about it. It is four frigates, if the the U.S. and China can let four frigates get in its way of improving diplomatic relations they obviously have bigger problems to solve between each other.

There won't be any repercussions for this but China still has to make a bit of noise. For appearances at least. The four frigates won't change the cross-strait balance of power in the slightest but they'll definitely have an impact in the South China Sea. I can see Taiwan further enforcing their claims against Vietnam. And what a grand sight it would be for PLAN 054s and ROCN Perry frigates to sail side by side as they chase Viet banana boats back to Cam Ranh.

That make the sense...
Only protection fee to US..

I was about to say the same thing. Its rather surprising they choosed to sell this outdated/old frigates to Taiwan, instead of more capable ones. :tsk: Guess its just a politcal statement, so that Taiwan doesnt feels like the U.S has completely abandoned selling it any weapons. In this regard its a good move for both parties i.e China and the U.S, since the former will lodge protests of course(just for officaldom sake, and make it known its her core interests, while knwoing they pose no threats at all), while the latter will gain some good will from its ally Taiwan(even though it isnt really much). WIN-WIN for everybody.

US won`t sell Arleigh Burke Class to Taiwan as it may unite with mainland China.
Then its latest military information will leak to China.
That is why US won`t sell latest weapon system to Taiwan but only old weapons.
Taiwan has no option. What ever US want to sell, they usually will all accept..

Its nothing new. Haven't you ever wondered why Taiwan acquired a much older Kidd Class Destroyer instead of an Arleigh Burke Class? Security risks, mon ami.

Sure, i've considered that. But let me introduce another point of reflection: Why should China care for Arleigh Burke Class? The Type 052Ds is China's own version of an 'AEGIS' destroyer ?

Arleigh Burke Class is an advanced anti-air warship, hard to sink and high threat to air force..
If Taiwan has it, mainland China need to find and put much effort to sink it before taking further military action to land in Taiwan.
Otherwise there may be severe lose on air force..
China`s 052D is also for air defense.
Target is US and Japan air force if US and Japan want to get involved in Taiwan issue..

I don't think engaging the US and Japan would be to anyone's best interest. :)

Engaging the Taiwan issue of China will also not by anyone`s best interest...

I doubt that the United States will intervene in Taiwan militarily. As for Japan, so long as Japanese nationals are not threatened and so long as Japanese military vessels are not targeted or attacked, why should we intervene?

Secondarily, think to yourself: "Is war over Taiwan really necessary?"

You will know your answer. It is a resounding No. I doubt that the Leadership in China and Taiwan would allow the situation to progress to the point of gun. East Asia has known no war in 60 years. I think our collective people (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) would like to keep it that way. Where compromise is possible, let it be maximized.

As an East Asian myself, I prefer my own kind not to kill each other , and to evade the travesty seen almost 70 years ago. To me, East Asian Race is precious, we have to preserve each other, and work together. We are kin....

That's my view.

China start AEGIS on type 051C.
052C can be considered the first mature AEGIS syste,
052D is an improved one with more function and 055 is still under development..

Wasn't PLA Navy's own AEGIS is Type 055, not Type 052D?

From my personal opinion, I fully agree with you that we should be in peace in east Asia..
Yet US did intervene in Taiwan issue in 1996.
As Japan is an ally of US, I doubt if Japan can stay away.
That is why China is developing its military force, to stop this kind of intervene..

For Taiwan issue, usually we can solve it by economy..
As Taiwan`s economy is much rely on mainland China, we will use economy rather than war..
Yet we should have the capacity to stop intervene.
China will not start a war, yet will not be afraid of war..
