China launched a Long March 11 carrier rocket on Friday to send six satellites into space, according to the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology.

The mission marked the first time that a Chinese solid-propellant rocket has been used to service a foreign client, the academy, which developed and built the rocket, said in a news release.

The Long March 11 blasted off at Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern China at 12: 12 pm and later put six small satellites — two Earth-observation satellites made by a State-owned firm, three experimental satellites from Chinese private companies as well as an unidentified one from a Canadian company — into orbit.

This is the third mission of Long March 11 and the 264th of the Long March family, according to the academy.

Long March 11 is 20.8 meters long, has a diameter of 2 m and a liftoff weight of 58 metric tons. It is capable of sending payloads of 700 kilograms to a low-Earth orbit or 400 kg to a Sun-synchronous orbit 700 kilometers above the ground, statistics from the academy show.

Its first flight was in September 2015 at the Jiuquan center when it lifted four satellites to a Sun-synchronous orbit. The second flight took place in November 2016 at the same center, sending an X-ray pulsar navigation satellite and four small experimental satellites into orbit.

JIUQUAN, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- China launched two high-resolution optical remote sensing satellites into the preset orbit from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China at 12:12 p.m. Friday Beijing Time.

The satellites, Jilin-1 Video 07 and 08, were carried by a Long March-11 rocket.

This was the 264th mission of the Long March rocket series.

The Huaian ‘Zhou Enlai’ satellite is China’s first nano-satellite with the involvement of primary and middle school students. The satellite, named after late Premier Zhou Enlai, was developed in Huai’an Youth Comprehensive Development Base in east China’s Jiangsu Province.

With a launch mass of 2 kilograms, this CubeSat-2U satellite is equipped with a HD optical camera, it can capture images with the highest resolution among those shot by other Chinese satellites for scientific education purpose.

The students that participated in the project had taken their spare time to join the development and ground-based simulation performance of the satellite, and had learned to assemble and practice voice data transfer and telecommunication applications. The project was approved in 2016.

The administration office of Huai’an Youth Comprehensive Development Base is the main organizer of the project. It is aiming to become the largest and most advanced youth aerospace science museum in China.


The CubeSat-3U Kepler-2 satellite was developed by Clyde Space for Kepler Communications, a satellite communications company that is working towards establishing an in-space telecommunications network for space-borne assets.

The company will try to resolve the problem of intermittent connectivity for non-geostationary satellites, will open new business opportunities that necessitate real-time connectivity to satellites, and will reduce reliance on costly and difficult to deploy ground infrastructure.

Kepler Communications is designing a constellation of CubeSats for Internet of Things (IoT), machine-to-machine (M2M) and inter-satellite communications services to provide a vastly improved IoT backhaul for customers on the ground, as well as real-time access to satellites in the same orbit.

In the future the constellation can expand to an initial size of 10 to 15 satellites in a polar orbit. With this fleet, the company would provide low data rate communications for various user terminals to the satellite, and a very large pipe to the gateway when over ground stations. For a late phase, the constellation might be increased to 120 satellites.

The Long March-11 (Chang Zhwng-11) is a small solid-fueled quick-reaction launch vehicle developed by the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT) with the goal to provide an easy to operate quick-reaction launch vehicle, that can remain in storage for long period and to provide a reliable launch on short notice.

The problem with the numerous Indian satellites is that they're like toys. Each INDIAN satellite weighs a few pounds. The Indian satellites cannot do anything useful. India can launch 30 toy satellites at a time, but who cares? They're useless.

On the other hand, China launches USEFUL satellites that are hundreds, thousands, or ten-thousand pounds in weight. Chinese satellites serve industrial purposes for communication, infrared sensing, optical imaging, data relay, etc.

You cannot compare Chinese QUALITY satellites to pointless Indian QUANTITY satellites.

On topic, congrats China.

Unfortunately for India, Chinese products are more popular in the rest of world than Indian products. The one Indian product, tech support, is a piece of ****. One wife hang up on an Indian girl once telling her she prays to God that she would not get her again as she couldn’t understand her Hinglish.

Congrats to China. But China need to do better to compete against space x.

China's DFH-4 communications satellite is 10,000 pounds, 15-year lifespan, and has a maximum of 54 transponders.

China has exported the DFH-4 communications satellite to five countries.

What does that have to do with silly Indian satellites that weigh a few pounds?

India keeps launching a bunch of tiny satellites every year.

Except for the misleading headlines, there is no reason to launch those useless Indian satellites.

The Indian newspapers are IMPLYING that all satellites are equal. They MOST DEFINITELY ARE NOT.

Chinese satellites are extremely heavy, designed for an industrial purpose, and have undergone generations of upgrades. In contrast, Indian satellites are primitive and mostly useless.

China's DFH-4 communications satellite weighs 10,000 pounds.

A typical Indian satellite weighs 10 pounds.

A Chinese DFH-4 satellite is 1,000 times heavier than your Indian satellite.

While India launched 100 satellites (or 31 in another case), China launched ONLY ONE satellite.

However, the Chinese satellite is comprised of 10,000 pounds of high-technology.

In contrast, 100 Indian satellites that weigh 10 pounds each total 1,000 pounds of low-technology.

Which satellite launch is more impressive?
