China is making a bet that no one will start a war to stop the island building

Go home. Please, renounce your American citizenship and go home. That you can sit and have an enjoyable time with your American friends while in your bravado, gleefully talk about China killing their sons and daughters.......well, I am just beyond words. You sit with your American citizenship, that brave young men and women have fought and died to protect, and you think them murderers. God, I can't imagine a human being being that.....ungrateful, disloyal, dishonest, horrible. It disgust me.

If he is an American citizen, does the 'First Amendment' not protect his right to free speech? Is it illegal to talk bravado on the internet?

Sigh, freedom of speech is not freedom from criticism.

As for the thread title, its a good bet where America is concerned, the claimants themselves would be the wild card.

So far there doesn't seem to be any wide spread support for war though, but they are definitely arming up.

I think US has recognized that we can't stop the island building short of instigating war, so we are moving on to play up the threat to the other claimants, and using the legal institutions to minimize their effect when it comes to legal passage.

The artificial islands themselves won't effect US operations to any real degree, they aren't survivable in a real war, but against the smaller claimants they are pretty effective.

Basically that means against the US they are a psyops weapon, but potentially a double-edged one.

If the US is not deterred and the credibility of US access to the SCS is not brought into question, their effect on the US is minimized.

The carrier group in the area likely serves this purpose, and maybe as a secondary warning to NK.

Their effect on claimant countries could go either way depending in part on how the US presence is perceived (and of course how China uses them). If the US shows that its patrols won't stop and that its access will not be hindered by those islands, then the claimants might be further incentivized to form coalitions with the US and other balancers (Japan, India) depending on how hard China pushes the utility of these islands.

They will arm up regardless of how the US is perceived and how China uses the islands, that cat is out of the bag for the medium term.

IF the US cannot maintain its credibility then those countries might look to other outside balancing powers who are percieved as more 'willing', or try to warm relations with China in a manner that will eventually leave China's claims undisputed, but will give those countries medium term benefits.

Probably there would be some brief and 1 sided skirmishes (assuming no balancer).

The last time US and China got into any sort of conflict, the US were kicked out of Korea (now North Korea). And China's military has been strengthened a lot since then.

What does culture have to do with military might!

You can´t build and empire when you have an isolated culture. Empires based on military tend to collapse within a short period of time.

This is hardly a bet because China actually isn‘t risking anything but the US has everything to lose, China is playing it smart, keep challenging a declining power’s non-core interests without overstepping its redline will no doubt result in great yield.

As for redlines, they are always drawn by power, not by mouth. But not surprisingly the excessive english media pieces will keep some dumb folks on PDF think otherwise.:lol:

See the bigger picture, this is all about power projecting, controlling the strait of Malacca and further into Indian ocean, so yes, if this is a bet, it goes well beyond just island building.

It would be foolish to bet. Chinese started island building because war or no war, Chinese would benefit in either way.

In South China Sea it is the complete opposite. US has no chance to beat China anywhere near China. And if a war between US and China takes place it will be there not elsewhere.

US is a responsible world superpower, it is for the peace, prosperity and democracy in the world.

Wow, there's a lot of bullsh*t the chinese pdf member here......it makes me wonder are those the IQ average level of mainland chinese??

Chinese PDF doesnt bother us in here, so better not to say any provocative statement like that, since when some Indonesian start doing this, and respond come from them, it really makes me quite busy to defend our honor actually....

It is better to focus on our own development rather than commenting like this, since we are not part of the conversation at all.......

Is this a joke/sarcasm?

That thing kind of happened in all of human history.
