China Construction Engineering Corporation Ltd is constructing the new state of the art international airport for Mauritius, a small island in the Indian Ocean mainly populated by Indian origin immigrant. "The construction of a modern state-of-the-art terminal at SSR International Airport was deemed necessary due to the airport being saturated and not able to cater satisfactorily for the increase in the flow of passengers. The present terminal was designed to accommodate some 750 passengers at peak hours. Over the past few years, the fi gure at peak hours has reached 1 200
passengers The new building will cater for current traffi c as well as the p r o j e c t e d traffi c growth and will ensure a sati sfactory level of service over ti me. With a total area of 57 000 m2, the terminal will handle 4.5 million passengers a year against 2.2 million presently. It is presently among the most important projects launched in Mauriti us in terms of contract value totti ng up to USD 300 million. The new terminal will be connected to the existi ng one. It integrates an environmental and ecological dimension in line with the Maurice Ile Durable concept, with its
architecture in glass and steel, the use of solar energy collected by photovoltaic cells, rainwater recovery and green space within the building. The terminal will accommodate, amongst others, 52 check-in desks, fi ve boarding gates of which one will be A380 compati ble, 26 immigrati on counters, fi ve telescopic passenger boarding bridges, fi ve baggage claim carrousels, a new
aircraft parking area and a landside car park located in front of the new terminal. The project is fi nanced through a loan of USD 260 million, secured in February 2009 by the AML from Exim Bank of China at a concessionaryrate of 2% for a period of 15 years."
