China has acknowledged that Gwadar’s strategic value is no less than that of the Karakoram Highway, which helped cement the China-Pakistan relationship. Beijing is also interested in turning it into an energy-transport hub by building an oil pipeline from Gwadar into China's Xinjiang region. The planned pipeline will carry crude oil sourced from Arab and African states. Such transport by pipeline will cut freight costs and also help insulate the Chinese imports from interdiction by hostile naval forces in case of any major war. Are you kidding me? Do you even know what Mongolia exports to even suggest such a notion? Majority of the exports in a few years time will primarily copper and coal and since they have no port & rail line how exactly are the goods going to be moved to India? Another export is beef and horse meat neither of which I am sure will be demand in India.

Military base? Even if that were possible (Big Big IF) how is the based going to get resupplied? Are you going to cut thru Kazakhstan then Russia or move it via port of Vladivostok and then side skirting China (which is easily 3,000 km of rough terrain)? And do you really think Mongolia with a population of 2.6 Million (Which is smaller then Singapore btw) will even risk pissing off both Russia and China just to accommodate you? And for what gain?

On a serious note , the article is a nonsense , India doesn't have the capability nor intention to so called engage China from Mongolia.

Mongolia just fits in the post Soviet era Look East policy of improving trade with the East.

Indeed, Pakistan shouldl be a strong Independant country and also to have a great voice in Indian Ocean too...the best is to possess a carrier battle group. As for Military base, it's not chinese style to have it on foreign countries. To face India PLA force in Tibet is enought.
