Naaa....IAF is very interested now. It's primarily the cost thing. 20 billion for Rafale, 20 billion for FGFA, they just can't keep the squadron numbers if they keep importing. And the Navy is presenting a clear example of what can be done if you focus home grown. Their budget is the least yet they now have aircraft carriers and a strong nuclear submarine pipeline. That's coz a lot of it is being built in Inida. IAF were just not confident. But I think now they're getting more aggressive, especially after how the IAF LCA has been in so much trouble while the Navy got a very specific product for a specific requirement within the timelines. It requires a change in mindset and I think the forces at long last are going through that.

Well definitely a lot are needed, that's for sure.

However I wonder is this low production rate deliberate? Observation is that China tends to make some batches at a time, do adjustment/upgrade, and do the same again in a new batch. Well that could be a balanced approach, taken care of both urgent existing need, while progressing with tech (lowering tech risk/exposure at each batch).

They just said it is AESA, but they didn't specify it.

I think the declassification needs a couple of years later.

Building World Class jet engines is very expensive and difficult challenge for any country. It's why only a handful of countries have cracked how to do it. China will open more production lines when they are happy with the engine's reliability and are confident of being able to reproduce every component of sufficient quality. I think China is almost at the point of being able to upscale their engine production capacity. The days of reliance on Russian jet engines are pretty much numbered.

China will open more production lines when they are happy with the engine's reliability and are confident of being able to reproduce every component of sufficient quality. I think China is almost at the point of being able to upscale their engine production capacity. The days of reliance on Russian jet engines are pretty much numbered.

True. In fact many will say building an operational reliable mass produced engine is the most technologically challenging thing to do. It shows how advanced a country's overall industrial base is and its level of development/experience. Its no coincidence only the U.S, U.K,FRANCE , GERMANY and RUSSIA (almost the P5 powers bar China) have been able to build a world renowned/reliable operational engine. So china trying to break into this field/elite club is indeed commendable. Wishing all the best to China.

It will take alot of time,but at the end it will be worth it. Afterall, mastering the art of building a reliable engine is still the archilles hill of China, as it has to import alot of engines from we in europe and Russia to power its aircrafts and naval warships. So being able to mass produce its engines domestically/indigeniously will indeed be a huge boost to China.

According to certain reports, the AESA was developed by the 14th Institute (which also happens to be the developer of such radars aboard the J-11D, J-20, KJ-2000, and KJ-500) and incorporates 1152 T/R modules.

after first batch of J-11B(using AL31), the later on J-11B and J-16 and J-11BS and even the J-11D test plane are all using ws10. u can clearly tell the difference of WS10 and AL31 from the picture.

as we are going to have a huge commercial interests in aviation engine industry, china has to step in to this area. it is reported that by the year 2030 china will have to buy thousands of planes for internal air transport needs,which means a big cake for Boeing and airBus. We chinese ourselves also dont want to ignore this big opportunity and profit.So u can see WS-20 program for Y-20 and future maybe on civilian airplanes.

Money is one thing, but it's due to the blood and sweat of Chinese scientists and engineers. If money can buy engines and latest military hardware Saudi Arabia would have been a superpower by now.

To build the turbofan engine is an extremely painful experience.

Otherwise, France wouldn't give up to reverse engineer the CFM56 core, and Japan is still struggling to build a jet engine for the F-4.
