Egypt can play key role in 'Belt and Road' project
June 27, 2015
Egypt can play a key role in China's "Belt and Road" initiative due to its strategic geographic location, said a senior diplomat with the Chinese embassy to the most populous Arab country.

Han Bing, minister counselor for economic affairs with the Chinese embassy in Cairo, told Xinhua in a recent interview that China and Egypt have complementary pro-development policies, citing Egypt's New Suez Canal project, which is scheduled to be inaugurated in August, as "a good opportunity" to boost bilateral cooperation.

Proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2013, the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road, known as the "Belt and Road" initiative, aims at reviving the ancient trade route between Asia and Europe.

The network threads through over 60 countries and regions, with a total population of 4.4 billion.

Late last year, Egypt and China have decided to elevate their bilateral ties to the level of "comprehensive strategic partnership"during Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi's official visit to Beijing.

The Egyptian leader hails Xi's initiative, pledging that his country will be an active part of the proposal, while Beijing also vows to support Cairo's efforts to maintain stability and growth as the nation strives to find a development path that fits its own conditions.

The Egyptian government has been busy preparing to launch the "New Suez Canal." The new waterway, an alternative to the original 190-km long Suez Canal, is expected to be 72 km long. It will involve 35 km of dry digging and another 37 km of expansion and deep digging some sections of the old one.

Han said port cooperation should be a priority for China and Egypt as the two sides join their hands in pushing forward the belt and road initiative.

He went on explaining that the harbors at both ends of the Suez Canal, as well as Port Said and Alexanderia, are for the moment very important to China's foreign trade conduct, adding that they also have great influence over the Middle East and Africa in terms of geopolitics and global trade.

The North African nation plans to open six new ports around the canal, and launch in the surrounding areas projects like a new industrial city, which is capable of hosting hundreds of factories, Han noted, suggesting that these programs can be investment choices for Chinese companies.

The Chinese diplomat also said that industrial parks are another area the two countries should focus in the belt and road initiative cooperation.

"Besides, a great success has been witnessed by China and Egypt in building the Economic & Trade Cooperation Zone at the Suez Canal region," Han told Xinhua.

According to his introduction, the first stage of the Suez Economic & Trade Cooperation Zone project, which is overseen by China's Tianjin TEDA Group Company Ltd., has been completed.

So far, the zone has attracted over 30 Chinese companies, while it has already been on its way to become the first integrated industrial complex in the Arab world, he said.

He added that the second stage of the Suez zone will be even more promising, and is going to become a star-program among all industrial parks in areas that have joined the belt and road initiative, as well as a model for China's joint adventures to develop such projects with foreign nations.

"The prerequisite for of all of the joint projects is the support from both the governments of Egypt and China," Han stressed.

Speaking of Egypt's investment environment, the minister counselor said China's investment in Egypt has been growing steadily over the past few years, even during those chaotic periods when the country's suffered political and social upheaval.

Han told Xinhua that Egypt has become increasingly secure and stable, which is an incentive for Chinese investments in the Arab country, adding that "the new Investment Law enacted by the Egyptian government to improve administrative efficiency is a good news for Chinese companies."

Han added that Egypt's economic revival provides an opportunity for China to improve bilateral economic and trade cooperation with the country.

The diplomat also encouraged more Chinese firms to seize the chance, and help the two countries' combined efforts in implementing the initiative.

Good development. While Egypt cuts all the ties with the Turkish state sponsor of terrorism and its muslim brotherhood terrorist lover government (Erdoghan is seen to cry over Mr. Morsi, again), China does establish a firm respectful relationship of mutual development and respect for sovereignty with secular Egypt.

ISIS lover Turkey, meanwhile, keeps supporting democracy in Egypt and Syria while working in close cohort with other religio-despots like KSA and Qatar.

Good going.

Egypt officially joins China’s Silk Road Economic Belt union
30/06/2015

Egypt has officially joined the Silk Road Economic Belt trade union, which encompasses 92 Chinese and foreign associations, the State Information Service (SIS) reported.

In cooperation with the Shanghai Chamber of Commerce, the Egyptian Businessmen Association (EBA) was chosen to represent Egypt in the Silk Road trade union.

EBA executive director Mohamed Youssef said Chinese President Xi Jinping disclosed that China targets to raise $2.5tn in trade volume to the Silk Road trade union in 10 years.

Youssef added the government is giving “great” attention to the initiative, with the aim of creating investment and trade opportunities between both countries, noting that the Chinese government offered to link the project to the Suez Canal.

According to Youssef, there are approximately 1,220 Chinese companies operating in Egypt in the industry, construction and services sectors with $500m in investments. He added that China ranks the 24th in foreign countries investing in Egypt.

The Silk Road Economic Belt is one of three initiatives adopted by the Chinese president. The initiative was proposed in September 2013 with the aim of linking three continents; Asia, Africa and Europe. The belt was said to reopen the links between China and Europe though the Middle East, Central Asian, South China Sea, the Malacca Strait and the Indian Ocean, to East and South Africa.

President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi visited China in December 2014, where he signed with his Chinese counterpart a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement. This included three cooperation agreements in the fields of economy and technical cooperation.

The two parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a joint laboratory for renewable energy, between Egypt’s Ministry of Scientific Research and China’s Ministry of Science and Technology. The third agreement was a cooperation agreement between China National Space Administration (CNSA) and the National Authority for Remote Sensing and Space Sciences (NARSS).

New Suez Canal gives China more investment opportunities: Egyptian diplomat
27/07/2015

Egypt’s former ambassador to China Mahmoud Allam said in an interview with CNC that Egypt’s new Suez Canal area will give China moreopportunities to invest in Egypt and other countries.

As China is promoting its “Belt and Road” initiative, which involves some 60 countries and 4.4 billion population, the project will help the initiative reach more countries in the region.

Egypt’s former ambassador to China:

“Egypt decides to establish an industrial city and logistics area in the Suez Canal zone, which will attract many investors and countries, especially China. The investment in the Suez Canal area will give the Chinese side the opportunity to invest in more countries… Egypt’s geographical location is very important, so near to the European, Arab and African markets.”

The 72 km long New Suez Canal, an alternative to the original 190 km long waterway, is expected to transform a 76,000 square km area on both banks into an international logistics, commercial and industrial hub.

To be inaugurated on Aug. 6, the project is one of the key national projects that are at the heart of Egyptian government’s efforts to revive the country’s sluggish economy.

The former ambassador believes the canal zone will also facilitate investment from China, which is promoting the “Belt and Road” initiative.

If possible,Egypt should be persuaded into allowing China to buy a stake in the New Suez Canal。:D

Mr. President Sisi is a capable leader, unlike the previous religio-lunatic dictator Morsi.

China must increase cooperation civilian as well as military sectors.

Egypt is waging a costly anti-terror campaign against Islamic Brotherhood and other terrorist factions.

China to establish 50 factories near Suez canal

2015-08-07

Acting as a gateway to the Atlantic ocean, Mediterranean Sea, and the Indian Ocean, the Suez Canal shortens the distance between the east and the west. It has great strategic and economic value. The Suez canal project will not only benefit Egypt, but also meets China's ambitious "one belt, one road" initiative.

The Belt and Road Initiative is China's trade and investment channel with Asia , Europe and Africa. Over 60% of the world's transport of trade is by ships. That's why the Maritime Silk Road, is an essential component of the Belt and Road Initiative.

Experts say the new Suez canal project, located in the centre of the route to the Middle East, North Africa and Europe, will play an integral role in the success of China's initiative .

Ahmed Sufy Abu Taleb trades with China. He says bilateral trade has increased 3 folds in the last 5 years reaching $10 billion. China signed investment MOUs this year worth $10 billion, in the energy and transportation sectors. But actual projects on the ground so far, don't exceed one billion. Abu Taleb, says there is room for more after the opening of the new suez canal.

The construction of the suez canal project coincides with the development of China's maritime silk road. If all goes to plan, both projects will complement each other to become a win win situation for Egypt and China.

Depends on which Egypt and which Turkey. I think I'm done with the domination thing. The best the the middle east can hope for is a multipolar middle east.
please explain.

Other than massive infra investment, China has established roughly 19 special economic zones ("SEZ") in the world, around 7 in Africa. The China-Egypt Suez Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone is one of them, lead investment by China-Africa TEDA Investment Co, Ltd.

Like all SEZ's, this zone is industrial in nature, it's all about manufacturing i.e. "Made in Egypt". Major firms here include Jushi Egypt Fiberglass Industry, XD High Voltage Equipment Company and Muyang Egypt Industry. The zone is under expansion now, ultimately it will bring 150~180 Chinese companies here, total investment US$2+ billion, creating 40,000 local jobs, generate significant tax revenues for Egyptian budget as well as their Forex reserves.

It will be going to cater for niche sector. Development in Islamo countries cannot go very far especially if the factories are going to hire a lot of female operators.

Arabs are proud people and they will not tolerate their female stooge in factory, especially if these female operators stand a high chance to provide sexual gratifications to their managers.
