Put aside who started the war, North or South Korea, for now. The US led UN army's mandate was to restore South Korea. But, Macarthur and Truman broke UN mandate, wanted to occupy North Korea and possibly also some Chinese territory. China repeatedly warned US led UN army not to cross the 38th parallel to occupy North Korea as that action would threaten China's security. But. US just ignored the warnings and called China's bluff becos it thought China was too weak and backward and would dared not to intervene. The result everyone knows now, US led UN army was driven back to the 38th parallel where the war was started in the first place making US to admit that the Korean War was fought at the wrong place with the wrong enemy at the wrong time. After effect of Korean War, US troops never dared to cross the 17th parallel into North Vietnam to fight the North Vietnamese army as China told the US not to cross it otherwise China would send troops to fight the US army.
