I doubt PLA is going to change it's name, until after Taiwan is settled. The political divide create this necessity to differentiate CCP & KMT forces.
No, China WILL have a new name for the PLA in our lifetime.

What was -- not is -- the implication of the label "People's Liberation" ? The implication was that there was a conflict within China and that conflict consisted of two fronts: ideological and physical, as in a civil war.

There is no civil war in China today. The CCP, despite its own label, is no longer Marxist. The Party is overwhelmingly powerful over the mainland. There is no more 'liberation' involved. The label 'People's Liberation" is anachronistic. Not only that, it belongs to a 3rd World country, a category that the Party is working to shed off China. The PLA is struggling to become a truly professional military. It is working towards that goal by modeling itself after the US. Not Russia. Not any country in Europe. But the US.

Get rid of the PLA label is logical. Making the air force the 'Chinese Air Force', the navy the 'Chinese Navy', and the army the 'Chinese Army' would only entrench this military into what we know and call 'China'. Not Taiwan. If anything, it would even further diminish Taiwan.

The funny part here is that I have far more respect for the PLA than you guys do.

The word "liberation" has a historical reason. As long as Taiwan is still not unified with the mainland, this word stays.

Not only Taiwan but many other areas within our sovereignty are yet to liberate too
So PLA is here to stay

So here they go:

PLAGF
PLAAF
PLAN
PLAMF ? = Missile Force?
PLASF ? = Space Force?
PLACF ? = Cyber Force?

What else?

Well it looks like part of the whole reform.

My opinion would be the reform should target to dismantle the previously army-centered, geographically-segregated (say the seven zones) and homeland-defense doctrined organization structure, and build a new organization by employing a flattened matrix structure.
  • The functional headquarters (军种领导机构) will be responsible for building the forces, the services. That should include the Army, Navy, Air Force, the newly inaugurated Rocket Force (previously Second Artillery Corp), and other smaller ones under the Central Military Commission. The newly inaugurated Army HQ is also one key measure to dismantle the existing army-centered military zones, and put the service on equivalent weight to the others. A note on the Rocket Force, it's not only strategic but tactical, some brigades shall be armed with conventional warheads, with ballistic missiles of various ranges.
  • The theater commands (战区) will be responsible for coordinating multi-functional forces under single joint-service command within their theater of operations. The theaters are mostly still geographical, may include North, East, South and West, which are defined as certain parts of homeland plus immediate vicinity within "reach" under the new doctrine of proactive defense (积极防御). A fifth possible theater is Central to command operations beyond the aforementioned four theaters e.g. space, cyber, geographies of strategic range.

Liberation from what/whom ?

I am approaching 53 yrs old. I grew up in the time when the word 'liberation' was already overused and abused by Marxists/communists to portray themselves and their ideology as a viable alternative. It was silly then and even more so now.
liberation from evil and Nazi U.S imperialism? ```` we can call whatever we want, you either live with it or file a compliant to Chinese Embassy :cuckoo:
