China becomes No. 1 source for international students in U.S.: report

All right, enough with this. Cardsharp is right. I apologize for the diatribe. I got carried away. And to quote Jeff Dunham : I am not white, I am neon white. So, enough with the citizenship paranoia. I thought only some red necks want our president to prove his citizenship but I guess all Americans have to prove their citizenship, even on cyberspace. Good afternoon everyone.

you should be worried (dont know if thats the right word) about indians, who have significant presence in many sectors

LOL!

Wow, two major lol's in one thread, who would've thought?

Since we're all so concerned about our American friend, do you think he should also be concerned about Pakistanis? Since, you know, the Dept. of Homeland Security thinks so...

US maintains extra airport checks for countries on watch list | World news | guardian.co.uk

"The other "countries of interest" are Afghanistan, Algeria, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Somalia, and four countries the US regards as state sponsors of terrorism: Cuba, Iran, Sudan and Syria."

My, an elite club of countries indeed

Buddy, no one shares Pakistan's concerns (aside from China to a limited extent).

Our undergraduate friend here thinks we're (Indians/Chinese) stealing American jobs. From what I've seen (in grad school), an overwhelming majority of post-grad students in applied and basic sciences are foreign nationals, notably Chinese and Indian, as the article rightly mentions.

Ever wonder why that's the case, rollingstones?

You're right about American universities, there's a reason the states is the #1 destination for intl' students. However, you need to realize that more and more kids in the states aren't interested in pursuing degrees in science or mathematics.

Now is this something you need to be concerned about? Yes and no.

1. Yes, because something's obviously wrong if kids aren't motivated enough to take up serious degrees in college.

2. No, because one the primary reasons for America success is because of its ability to attract and absorb talent from around the world. A lot of effort has been put into building and promoting institutions/mechanisms to facilitate the same.

For example:

STEM Designated Degree Programs

Like I said, there's a reason they want to retain students in these fields.

Oh god damn it.

I spent all this time coming up with a reply only to find that he's some Indian american kid who'd already come around by the time I was done.

Weak.

. . .
How could chinese simply take american jobs? It is up to the american managers to give them out.

By the same logic as 'the Chinese are stealing American manufacturing'.

Even though it is actually a case of American firms taking manufacturing contract onto the open market and China is the lowest bidder.

I was going to respond but my dad made me go fix the drywall. Guess I should thank him.

With STEM jobs being outsourced in massive numbers, I am not sure we are looking to these jobs as breadwinners. My point is not to take away any job that an American has qualified for. There is fraud and abuse in that system. That's my point.

Also i remember coming across a US Govt website on this forum

That had app which showed data of each immigrant group and the employment in the type of industry.

When it came to India most of them part of the IT industry.

When it came to China ,most of the jobs occupied were into restaurants business, signifying most of the Chinese who come to US for education go back to China ,unlike previous generation of immigrants.

So the statement Chinese are stealing/taking over American jobs seems not so convincing to me

This is actually an increasing trend. Chinese people (at least most overseas Chinese) now view China as the true land of opportunity and America is just a place to get an education.

By all accounts things like social mobility is higher and there is a much better chance that you can truly build a business or a legacy that you can pass to your kids in China.
