China backs India joining UNSC

A day after PM Manmohan Singh launched a fresh bid for India to be included in the United Nations Security Council stating the the UNSC needed to be restructured, India's Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon said that India's neighbour China is in favour of India being included in UNSC. Menon also said that China is also in favour of the UN being restructured.

India’s efforts to join the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), New Delhi on Thursday received the support for its bid from its neighbour, Beijing. The Foreign Secretary also added that Beijing seeks restructuring of the UN, echoing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Attending the Group of Eight summit in Italy, the PM has stated that the UNSC needs restructuring, as its “present structure poses serious problems of legitimacy”. “The system of two-tiered membership, which gives a veto to the five permanent members, i.e. the nations that emerged victorious after the Second World War, is clearly anachronistic," Dr Singh said. "It is obvious that if the system was being designed today it would be very different," he said while critiquing the sluggish movement in the crucial area of reforms of international institutions. Making a case for the inclusion of emerging and developing countries in the Security Council and global financial institutions, the Prime Minister outlined his vision of India's place in the international order. "India, as the largest democracy in the world and an emerging economy that has achieved the ability to grow rapidly, remains deeply committed to multilateralism," the PM said.

sorry mistake there - i mean india would liek to have - unsc with veto power without veto power its not really worth it.

That's a tactical move by PRC, support for UNSC is fruitful only when supported by all the P5's, where is US in the story? The story ends only when US would put forward its support.

as a country with 1.1B people ,it's just matter of time that india will joint the security souncil,no matter china support or not.but i don't think china or russia really want it to happen,it will be US,UK,France,india against other two,balance lost

if china is indeed supportive of our candidature...then there can't be a bigger confidence building measure ever!
in respone we should definitely settle the boundary disputes and show our goodwill to the chinese.

you are right...aimarraul...but Russia supports our bid...and the americans do not..they say they are considering it....Uk has voised it's support yesterday...France also supports...so it was just China and the US.So in reality we are more dependent on the chinese for that.

Times now reported yesterday that all major players including Russia and America agreed to India's bet as permanent member,only china was the main prob....,...now with this news if true,i guess we are about 90% there
