General Raheel Sharif, COAS today attended the golden jubilee celebrations of Frontier Works Organisation at Thalian, near Islamabad toll plaza on motorway. FWO has played central role in spearheading Army’s contribution in all nation building efforts. He said that over the years, FWO has developed into a strategic organization with tremendous capability to deliver projects of national significance.

In addition to numerous Hydel and mining projects, construction of KKH, Central Trade Corridor through wazirstan to Afghanistan, Coastal Highway and now over 1000 Kms CPEC Roads are some of their signature projects. Going into inaccessible areas to connect the remotest parts of the country with mainland, highest quality work in least time have been its hallmark. COAS congratulated them on accomplishing the unthinkable and vowed for whole Army to continue working for security and prosperity of the country. COAS paid tributes to 1300 officers and soldiers of FWO for laying down their lives during execustions of various national projects since their raising in 1966.
Earlier on arrival at Thalian COAS was received by Lt Gen Khalid Asghar, Engineer in Chief and Major General Muhammad Afzal, DG FWO.

COAS met with Pakistan Army team which won Gold Medal in “Exercise Cambrian Patrol” held in UK from 14-23 October.

General Raheel Sharif, COAS visited Corps Headquarters Karachi and attended the ongoing Exercise "Resilient Response" of Southern Command. He was briefed in detail about the conduct and conclusions of the Exercise encompassing both defensive and offensive operations. Talking to participants, COAS expressed his complete satisfaction over enhanced battle worthiness and operational preparedness of formations.
Later COAS also Presided over a security conference which was attended by Corps Commander, DGISI, DGMI, DGMO and DG Rangers. Appreciating the accomplishments of security forces and intelligence agencies for improved law and order situation in the city, COAS directed to continue focused operations in conjunction with other LEAs and provincial govt for complete restoration of peace for common citizen of Karachi.

Colonel General Berdiyev Yaylym Yagmyrovich, Minister of Defence and Secretary National Security Council Turkmenistan called on General Raheel Sharif, COAS today at GHQ. Matters of professional interest and regional security situation were discussed during the meeting.Earlier on arrival at GHQ,a smartly turned out contingent of Pakistan army presented guard of honour to the visiting dignitary who laid floral wreath at YadgareShahuda.

General Raheel Sharif, Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), visited Government College University (GCU) Lahore, his alma mater and interacted with the students and faculty members, today. To revive his old memories,he visited various sections of the premier institute specially those parts where he had spent his days as a student.

While interacting with them, Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif said that Pakistan Army proudly carries its heritage and tradition of soldiering and chivalry. Taking inspiration from our war heroes and their spirit of sacrifice, Pakistan Army has always measured upto any challenge. With an unprecedented level of successes in war against terror, we have become the most battle hardened Army and are equally ready for conventional war. He specially appreciated the highest state of morale of troops and best form of vigilance along LOC, working boundary and international border.

Chief of Army Staff laid a floral wreath at the monument of Major Shabbir Sharif Shaheed, NH . He paid rich tributes to our Shuhada and Ghazis for fighting bravely and rendering supreme sacrifice in defence of the motherland.

Gen Raheel Sharif has kicked off his farewell visits nearly a week before he is expected to retire as Chief of Army Staff, DG Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Asim Bajwa announced.

The army chief began his visits on Monday at the Lahore Garrison where he addressed and thanked a huge gathering of soldiers of Pakistan Army and Rangers.

Addressing the soldiers, Gen Raheel said accomplishment of peace and stability was "no ordinary task".

"Our sacrifices and joint national resolve helped us in off-setting all odds against [the] country."

The army spokesman had in January rubbished rumours regarding an extension in Gen Sharif's tenure as Chief of Army Staff, quoting the army chief as saying he will "retire on the due date" in November this year.

Speculation had been rife regarding an extension in the COAS' term after former military ruler Musharraf called for an extension in his tenure, warning against a change in the military leadership.

The post of Army chief is inarguably the most powerful in Pakistan. On Nov 27, 2013, the government approved Sharif’s appointment for the post, a position that he took over from Ashfaq Parvez Kayani who stepped down on Nov 29, 2013.

Gen Sharif is expected to pass on the baton of command of the army to the next army chief at a ceremony by the end of this month.

He would be the first army chief to retire on time in two decades. His predecessors Gen Kayani and Gen Pervez Musharraf got extensions, while Gen Jehangir Karamat was sent home prematurely.

Who could be next?
Going by the book, it is the senior most three-star general who would become the next chief. But this rule is seldom observed. Even when Gen Sharif became the army chief he was third on the seniority list.

A panel of three general officers is sent to the prime minister by the defence ministry, but it is his (PM’s) discretion to appoint anyone whom he thinks is most suited for the job.

The next four in line are: Lt Gen Maqsood Ahmed (currently on deputation with the UN), Lt Gen Zubair Mehmood Hayat (Chief of General Staff), Lt Gen Syed Wajid Hussain (HIT Taxila) and Lt Gen Ishfaq Nadeem (Corps Commander Multan).

The race is wide open but some defence analysts are of the opinion that Gen Hayat and Gen Nadeem are among the front-runners.

Gen Raheel's legacy
Back in 2013 when Gen Kayani announced that he would not take an extension for a second time, Gen Sharif was not among the favourites in the race for army chief. Even after he beat all the odds to become the chief, his detractors continued to doubt him saying he lacked intelligence and operations background.

But he did not allow those shortcomings to become a handicap and proved everyone wrong.

The high point in his tenure was the start of Operation Zarb-i-Azb in North Waziristan against the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan in June 2014, something from which his predecessor shied away fearing blowback. The operation is now in its last stages. He is also credited for action against militancy in Karachi and partially restoring calm in the city.

Gen Sharif has all along been supportive of the government, except for a statement at the corps commanders’ conference last November when he expressed reservations over civilian administration’s governance. The comment presented the spectacle of a row between the civilian and military leadership. He has, nevertheless, maintained strong influence over the government’s foreign and national security policies.

Profile: COAS Gen Raheel Sharif
Born in Quetta on June 16, 1956 to Major and Mrs Muhammad Sharif, Army chief Gen Raheel Sharif grew up steeped in the military tradition.

He attained his formal education at Government College Lahore and later went on to attend the Pakistan Military Academy.

As a young officer, he performed his duties in Gilgit in an infantry brigade and also served as adjutant of Pakistan Military Academy.

Over the years, Sharif climbed up the military ladder mentored by Musharraf who handed him command of the 11th Infantry Division in Lahore.

He was awarded the Hilal-i-Imtiaz, the second highest civilian award and honour that is given to both civilians and military officers of the Pakistan armed forces.

Despite the common surname, Raheel Sharif is not related to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, but is known to be close to tribal affairs minister Lieutenant-General Abdul Qadir Baloch, a key confidante of the Sharif family.

The general is married with two sons and a daughter.

ISLAMABAD/RAWALPINDI: As General Raheel Sharif kicked off his farewell meetings on Monday, here's a look back at the illustrious career of Pakistan's incumbent army chief, which is nearing its end.

When General Raheel Sharif was passed the baton of command in 2013 by his predecessor Gen. Ashfaq Pervez Kayani, the circumstances were not altogether bright. Suicide bombings and incidents of terrorism were quite common in the country. However, General Raheel rose to the challenge and proved the English expression, 'When the going gets tough, the tough gets going' true.

After becoming army chief, Gen. Raheel Sharif took important, crucial and decisive actions which steered Pakistan out of a significant number of problems. It was General Raheel Sharif's leadership which ensured that militancy and terrorism were rooted out of FATA, especially the Waziristan region and thousands of displaced TDPs were restored to their original places of residence. Not only that, his contribution in restoring peace to Karachi and making sure the CPEC project was initiated, has been praised numerous time by supporters and critics alike.

Operation Zarb-e-Azb was launched by Pakistan Army officially on June 15, 2014 against militants who had time and again attacked the country. Through well-coordinated and effective airstrikes coupled with advancements by the infantry, militant outfits once considered invincible such as the TTP, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, Al-Qaeda, Jundullah and Islamic Movement for Uzbekistan, were rendered toothless by army. Gen. Raheel was always at the forefront; often mingling with soldiers in Waziristan during Eid occasions and visiting tribal elders to take them into confidence regarding Pakistan Army's operations.

Gen. Raheel Sharif also took considerable care of TDPs in Pakistan and oft visited their camps. His dedication to the cause of TDPs ensured that they safely returned to their residences and lived a peaceful life yet again.

When Pakistan Army successfully started pushing back Afghanistan-based militants into their country, terrorists started using Afghan soil to launch attacks into Pakistan. Gen. Raheel ensured proper monitoring of Pakistan's border with Afghanistan and the practice of proper scrutinization of Afghan immigrants entering Pakistan was also undertaken during his tenure.

Another significant highlight of Gen. Raheel Sharif's tenure was to have the Pakistan Military Parade restored after seven long years, on March 23, 2015. General Raheel Sharif is also accredited with keeping the armed forces away from politics. Political commentators and analysts have always praised him for his professional capabilities.

General Raheel Sharif will hang his boots on November 29, 2016. He will undoubtedly leave behind a golden legacy for many to admire and emulate.

Outgoing Chief of Army Staff Gen Raheel Sharif on Monday chaired a farewell Corps Commanders' Conference at General Headquarters.

The army chief is set to retire on Nov 29, which is when the new army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa will take over as COAS.

Incoming army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, corps commanders and principal staff officers were present at the meeting, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.

The corps commanders paid tribute to Gen Raheel for his leadership and professional acumen, and lauded his service to the country, ISPR said.

Gen Raheel congratulated the army chief designate for his elevation to the rank of General and appointment as COAS, the statement said.

Gen Raheel said it was a matter of great pride for him to have commanded the most battle-hardened army in the world for three years.

He appreciated the corps commanders for their cooperation during his tenure and said the successes achieved during his tenure would not have been possible without contributions by each one of them.

The outgoing COAS Gen Raheel also paid farewell visits to President Mamnoon Hussain and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in Islamabad on Monday.

PM Nawaz and President Mamnoon lauded Gen Raheel's valuable services as army chief and wished him the best for his post-retirement life.

The general garnered unprecedented popularity among the general public and on social media.

Earlier this year, mysterious banners calling on Gen Sharif to "take over" the government popped up in various cities across the country. Most recently, banners were spotted in Rawalpindi which urged him to contest the general elections in 2018. The army denied having any connection to the banners.

The new army chief

PM Nawaz on Saturday named the new military command, appointing Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa as the chief of army staff.

Gen Bajwa has extensive experience of handling affairs in Kashmir and the northern areas of the country.

Despite his extensive involvement with Kashmir and northern areas, he is said to consider extremism a bigger threat for the country than India.
