COAS orders dismantling of Sui cantonment

QUETTA – While announcing the dismantling of Sui Cantonment and turning it into a education city, Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani Monday said an educated and prosperous Balochistan guaranteed a strong and stable Pakistan.

He said strong, stable and thriving Balochistan had remained utmost dream of Army as it could help making the country prosperous.
He was addressing the inaugural ceremony of country’s third military college at the gas producing town of Sui in Dera Bugti district.

Balochistan Governor Nawab Zulfiqar Ali Magsi, Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Raisani and Commander Southern command Lt Gen Javed Zia were also present on the occasion.

Kayani said the people and the Army could make Pakistan a strong country by joining their hands, adding that the masses were the real power of the Army which could not achieve its goals without their cooperation.

He said Balochistan was rich in natural resources and the local people had the first right over this wealth.

He said the establishment of Pakistan Educational City Sui would bring a positive change in the area which was a New Year gift on behalf of Army to the people of Balochistan.

“Efforts are being made to induct more and more Baloch youth in the Army,” he said, adding that 3,500 Baloch youth were imparted technical training while another 1700 were being trained by the Army.
The COAS said Baloch were patriotic and could play a very constructive role for the defence and prosperity of the country.

He said mega development projects were completed in the province in past and now under 18th Amendment, Balochistan received 110 per cent more resources, which should be spent for human development and prosperity of the province.

In his speech, Governor Zulfiqar Magsi sought General Kayani’s attention towards the growing number of missing Baloch youth and made a passionate appeal for their recovery, saying the international community was also expressing their concern over the matter.

Magsi stressed the need of exposing the people involved in the abduction of missing persons and said their families should be informed whether they were alive or not. If they were involved in any criminal activity, they should be tried in the court of law, he added.

Kayani’s decision example of patriotism: Saifullah

ISLAMABAD - President PML-Q (Likeminded) Saleem Saifullah Khan on Monday said that the decision to oppose North Waziristan military operation by General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani and rejecting US pressure in this regards is the need of the hour and an explicit example of patriotism.

The so-called war on terror has destroyed Pakistan’s peace and solidarity to the extent that its economy is now on the verge of disaster and the US wants to inherit Afghan war to Pakistan, he stated.

He said that Pakistan economy has suffered $43 billion loss and thousands of Pakistanis including army officials and civilians had sacrifices their lives but despite of that US continues to demand more in this regard. He said, “US is still not satisfied and happy with the role played by Pakistan in war on terror despite huge sacrifices in terms of lives, wealth and infrastructure.”

He said, “Pakistan is passing through a critical time and the Army Chief while sensing his constitutional responsibility decided in supreme national interest and opposed military operation in North Waziristan.
He while applauding Army Chief for the move said that, the decision to oppose military operation in North Waziristan has cleared the doubts and concerns of the whole nation that welcomes it.

He said that suicide and drone attacks and terrorist activities have destroyed Pakistan’s peace and it is need of the hour to take bold decisions. He said that the whole nation was standing with the Army Chief as Pakistan could not afford further military operation and it had saved Pakistan from jumping into a quagmire.

Magsi asks Kiyani to help in recovery of missing persons

QUETTA, Jan 03 (APP)- Governor Balochistan Nawab Zulfiqar Ali Magsi on Monday urged the Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kiyani to help government of Balochistan in the recovery of missing persons as the issue was worsening the already deteriorated situation of the province.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony of Pakistan Education City Sui (PECS) and later talking to media persons he expressed his grave concern over the issue of missing persons as saying people may be detained by any law enforcement agencies must be produced before the court. Anti Pakistan elements are exploiting it for the accomplishment of their ulterior designs, he added.

It is painful situation for the families of missing persons as they don know whether their loved ones are alive or dead, Nawab Magsi deplored.

He hailed the establishment of PESC and said People in Balochistan had realized that not stick but education would bring about positive change in their life.

“We have always asked displeased Baloch nationalists to resolve the issue by using the proper tool of negotiation and would continue asking the same till the durable peace in the province, he reiterated.

US special envoy calls on COAS

Rawalpindi—Mr Frank J. Ruggiero, Acting US Special Representative for Afghan and Pakistan called on Chief of Army Staff, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani at General Headquarters on Friday. The visiting dignitary remained with him for some time and discussed the matters of mutual interest, including Pakistan-US military cooperation to fight the menace of terrorism in Afghanistan.

Mr Ruggiero, who is visiting for the first time as Special envoy after the dead of Richard Holbrooke assured that the US would extend all the assistance to Pakistan to fight the menace of terrorism and to overcome other challenges including energy shortages. In this connection he referred to investments being made by the US for up gradation of power house at Tarbela Dam and other thermal power stations.

He appreciated the role of Pakistan army in rooting out the menace of terrorism in Swat, Malakand and from vast areas of tribal agencies. He expressed the hope that Pakistan would take action against militants on its side of the border in North Waziristan. The Chief of Army Staff expressed his condolences on the death of Richard Holbrooke and lauded his valuable services for promoting trust between Pakistan and the United States.—INP

you say it so nonchalantly, as if it is so easy....

I do agree with you, however Americans seem to overlook the importance of civilian govt. role as well, for whatever it is worth. Apply the inexorable pressure you are good at, but in the right areas

and driving out terrorists in lands like these is exactly what is happening....many get killed, some many abandon the cause....but those that don't are driven out of one tribal agency and take refuge in another

it's winter now anyways, fighting always wanes during this season....also remember that US needs to work on its image in some of these war affected regions; it's very difficult to ''sell'' the idea of Afghanistan war to a lot of these people. So while the extremists' popularity is very low, perception of US isnt much better and that's what Americans should focus on correcting

Pakistan nation has paid a huge price on this war against terrorism; our concerns have not been whole-heartedly addressed the way they should be

Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani visited Artillery Centre Attock and Frontier Scouts College Warsak today.

At Artillery Centre Attock, he witnessed various training activities of recruits and appreciated their spirit and the standards achieved. During informal interaction with the recruits, COAS emphasized the need to develop individual basic skills to meet challenges of Low Intensity Conflict as well as conventional wars.

COAS later visited Frontier Scouts Cadet College Warsak and inaugurated the College hostel dedicated to Shuhada of Frontier Corps. In his address COAS appreciated the development of Frontier Scouts Cadet College as an institution of repute in just over a year and lauded the efforts of all involved in the project. He emphasized the need for quality education to fight ignorance and extremism.

Cadets, notables from the area and military officials attended the ceremony.
