Nine's Europe Correspondent Sophie Walsh has been assaulted during a live television cross in London by a man making motions to stab her.

Walsh had been speaking to 9News Adelaide's Brenton Ragless tonight when the man approached her and yelled the words "Allah Akbar".

Walsh screamed out as he grabbed her.

Thank you for your messages. The man has been arrested for threats to kill and carrying a weapon. I’m shaken but ok. Big thanks to my incredible camerman Jason Conduit who chased him down armed with a light stand and got him arrested. https://twitter.com/9newsperth/status/1268126431047036934 …

It is unclear whether the man was armed with a screwdriver, however he has since been arrested for threats to kill and possession an offensive weapon.

Walsh remains shaken by the incident, but is unharmed.

"Nine News appreciates the enormous pressure our international correspondents are under and is offering Sophie Walsh ongoing support," Nine has said in a statement.

"Sophie is grateful for the outpouring of support she has received from the public and wishes to reassure our viewers that she is safe and well."

She has been reporting on protests that have sparked up in the United Kingdom and Europe in light of the demonstrations and riots in the United State after the death of African American man George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officers.

At the time of the assault, Walsh had been discussing riots in Paris where tear gas was used to scatter protesters and police were pelted with debris during an unauthorised demonstration against racial injustice and heavy-handed police tactics.

Riots in Paris against police brutality

The protesters also paid tribute to Adama Traore, a French black man who died in police custody.

Police had banned the protest because of coronavirus restrictions that had forbidden any gathering of more than 10 people.

Floyd died last week after a police officer pressed his knee into his neck for several minutes even after he stopped moving and pleading for air. The death set off protests that spread across America - and now, beyond.

The Paris protest plans drew attention online, and demonstrators showed up despite coronavirus concerns. Rallies also were held in other French cities in honor of Traore, who died shortly after his arrest in 2016.
