Ahead of external affairs minister Salman Khurshid’s visit to Iran from May 3-5, the Union cabinet is likely to approve an assistance plan of $100 million (about Rs. 539 crore) to develop the port. “The cabinet approval is expected soon,” said an official.

Gwadar has strategic importance for China as 60% of its crude oil comes from Gulf countries that are close to the port.

Chabahar will not only help New Delhi counter Beijing’s presence but also boost India’s trade and investment ties with landlocked Afghanistan and central Asia by providing it with a transit route to the region (Pakistan does not allow Indian goods to pass through its territory). India, Iran and Afghanistan have already signed an agreement to give Indian goods heading for central Asia and Afghanistan preferential treatment and tariff reductions at Chabahar.

Moreover, the development of the port will also help Afghanistan reduce its dependence on Pakistan’s Karachi port for access to the Indian Ocean. At present, Afghanistan uses Karachi for its trade and to receive energy supplies.

Chabahar has been on the agenda in discussions between India and Iran since 2003.

But a host of problems — including the chill in India-Iran ties after Delhi voted against Tehran at the International Atomic Energy Agency, and US’s concerns regarding Iran’s nuclear programme — have prevented the project from taking off so far.

- Real importance of Gwadar lies in its potential trade route to Gulf states which won't prefer Iran.
- Iran won't allow India to instigate China.
- India can't juggle between USA/ Nato and Iran for the time being.

.
Being a pakistani, you know more about indian foreign policy?

We ALWAYS juggle OPPOSITE blocks like Israel and Iran, US and Russia.

chabhar is nearer to Gulf and is more favourable to Afghanistan , etc. A port offering services offers alt. to Gwadar.

.
Does India know India is also next to Gwadar port just like Iran?

Sometimes I feel indians forget India is next to Pakistan. You building the new port is useless cause you can have one, of the same distance and with your own transportation system to the Gwadar port.

This is like your next door neighbor bothers you and you two are fighting. You want to be closer, instead of just using your own house which is already next to him, you had to buy the house from the other side too just to be the same distance from him.

Envoy: Iran Seeks Development of Economic, Cultural Ties with Afghanistan

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Ambassador to Kabul Abolfazl Zohrehvand underlined Tehran's enthusiasm for the further expansion of relations with Afghanistan, specially in economic and cultural fields.

"Tehran wants to expand economic, scientific and cultural ties with Afghanistan," Zohrehvand said in a meeting with Governor-General of Kandahar province Touriali Vissa on Saturday.

He referred to the economic relations between Iran and Afghanistan, and said he is in Kandahar to meet provincial officials over Iran's Chabahar port, which will soon be connected to the Central Asia via Afghanistan via a road and a rail link.

World trade experts believe that the corridor will cause a jump in regional trade and economy.

"Afghanistan will be connected to the Central Asian states by bringing the Chabahar (Southern Iran) route to operation," the Iranian envoy said, reminding the geopolitical importance of the rail link for Afghanistan.

Zohrehvand also called for strengthening cultural ties between the two countries.

The International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) was established in 2000 by Iran, Russia and India in order to promote transportation cooperation among the members. Later Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz, Tajikistan, Turkey, Ukraine, Belarus, Oman, Syria and Bulgaria joined the corridor.

The corridor joins Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf to the Caspian Sea through Iran and then reaches to St. Petersburg and North Europe via Russia.

Managing-Director of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways Abdulali Saheb-Mohammadi said in May 2012 that Indian companies have indicated their willingness to help Iran construct North-South Corridor.

"We have had negotiations with the Indian side so that they can be involved in building the corridor and Iran has also announced readiness to cooperate with them," Saheb-Mohammadi said.

India is expected to sign a contract with Iran soon for transit of Indian goods to Afghanistan via Chabahar port, media reports said in March.

Iran and India have agreed on transit of Indian goods to Afghanistan via the southern Iranian port of Chabahar in a bid to ease its exports to Afghanistan, the Indian Express newspaper quoted an informer Indian source as saying on condition of anonymity.

The Southern sea port of Chabahar has already been connected to Afghanistan with a newly built road; a move which analysts say will boost trade between the two countries and allow Afghan goods to reach foreign markets without relying on Pakistan.

The new trade route will also allow Indian goods to reach Afghan and other Central Asian markets with greater ease.

“The Chinese are Starting to Feel Surrounded by US Forces from All Sides”: Expert

By Konstantin Garibov

Voice of Russia and Stop NATO
Region: Asia

“I don’t think that China’s leaders today want to make compromises with the US. It is unlikely that China will agree to create a program of developing its navy that would satisfy the US. In its turn, the US also doesn’t want to be ousted by China from its positions in the Asia-Pacific region. Besides its military presence there, the US also wants to maintain control over all the transport routes in this region, and China is now becoming a serious rival for the US from this point of view as well.”

In 2012, the US announced that it is starting “to return to Asia” – that is, to broaden its military presence in the south of the Asia-Pacific region.

This is the US’s response to China’s increasing military activity in disputed waters in the East China and the South China Seas.

The US is going to move up to 60% of its navy to the Asia-Pacific region. That would increase the US’s military presence there 3 times in comparison with the current situation.

At present, about 60 to 70 US military ships and from 200 to 300 planes are constantly present at US naval bases in Japan and South Korea. Besides, at least 2 US aircraft carriers are constantly keeping watch in the region.

Now, according to President Obama’s order, US naval forces are to increase in Australia, Singapore and the Philippines.

In Australia, the number of US marines will be increased 10 times and will reach 2,500 people. Besides, the US will have broader access to the Australian naval base on the coast of the Indian Ocean, to the south of the city of Perth.

Up to 4 US navy ships will be deployed near Singapore’s coast.

The US is also planning to deploy up to 500 servicemen and reconnaissance aircraft in the Philippines and to create a center for repairing US navy ships there. Moreover, the US does not rule out that in some time from now, the Philippines may become the center of commanding US forces in the Asia-Pacific region.

“In such conditions, the Chinese are starting to feel surrounded by US forces from all sides,” Russian expert in Eastern affairs Yuri Tavrovsky said in an interview with the Voice of Russia. “After all, the US does not hide the fact that the reason it is strenthening its military presence in the Asia-Pacific region is the growing influence of China there.”

“In its turn, China is actively developing its navy,” Mr. Tavrovsky continues. “It is hard to deny that within the last few years, China’s economy has been rapidly developing, which has allowed China to considerably increase its military might. It would probably be an exaggeration to say that China is becoming aggressive, but it is obviously starting to realize that it is getting strong enough to afford dictating its will to other countries.”

Another Russian expert, Evgeny Kanaev, is predicting that US-Chinese relations will most probably aggravate even further:

“I don’t think that China’s leaders today want to make compromises with the US. It is unlikely that China will agree to create a program of developing its navy that would satisfy the US. In its turn, the US also doesn’t want to be ousted by China from its positions in the Asia-Pacific region. Besides its military presence there, the US also wants to maintain control over all the transport routes in this region, and China is now becoming a serious rival for the US from this point of view as well.”

Experts are concerned that the US’s policy of regaining military control over the Asia-Pacific region and its competition for this role with China may aggravate the situation in this region to a very dangerous point.

IRG active in Chabahar port

Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRG) is an independent paramilitary group, founded after the Iranian revolution.

The IRG has roughly 125,000 military personnel including ground, aerospace & naval forces.

Its naval forces are now the primary forces tasked with operational control of the Persian Gulf & control of the Strait of Hormuz and resistance operations.

IRG noticed the important role of the port of Chabahar, because of its unique characteristics such as being out of the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf.

IRG responsible for the Iranian missile command & expected to assume control of any Iranian response to attacks on its nuclear facilities.

Jamati IQ at it's best

OT one thing that may work in Chabahar's favor is the absence of terrorism and relative stability in Iran.
