Centre puts bombs before birds – UPA missile testing policy for Andamans reversed

What will happen at the worst

The birds will get EXTINCT ; so be it

But Animals are smart they adapt and migrate

Man, this is whole new level of stupid here. No amount of missile testing is worth the loss of an entire species

@Viny

The Andamans are GOD's GIFT to India for SECURING ITSELF

The Andamans are a NATURAL and unsinkable Aircraft Carrier and a Military base
that will be the FIRST LINE of Defence against a Chinese Agression

They should be EXCLUSIVELY used for Military purposes

Man, this is whole new level of stupid here. No amount of missile testing is worth the loss of an entire species

You are in the wrong place ie PDF if you are so obsessed with environment

Infact the Army guys plant a lot of trees and care for the environment

What you are proposing is nothing but stupidity that
Andamans be RESERVED for Birds

Do you know USA has DESTROYED SO MANY ISLANDS around the world with
Nuclear and Conventional weapons tests

How in the world does planting trees mitigate the loss of rare biodiversity elements ?

And why does India need to follow suit IF the US does the same ? If the United States decide to blow themselves up one fine day will you advocate India blow itself up as well. ?

You seem confused. You're not packing any 'heat' here. You're just plain stupid.

There is plenty of environmental damage already happeneing because of
GROWING population in India

Why dont we stop that first

The biggest threat to environment is the rising population

You are in the wrong place ie PDF if you are so obsessed with environment

Please jump of the cliff when you hear next time an American jumped of the cliff and died.
Please dont quote or tag me anymore.

Tests like should be done on barren lands where there is no flora or fauna to get damaged.
Agreed, but are there any such places in India that meet the requirements for the IN? Given the fact the IN is fixated on this location I would argue not so the point remains- giving the green light to test here is the lesser of two evils. It is not ideal but we live in an imperfect world where tough decisions have to be made.

+ I would like to point out that many are loosing sight of the fact the IN has been unable to meet its minimum practice allowance for years because of this decision. Is it clear to everyone what this means? This means the IN has not been able to give its crews and equipment a chance to prove or test itself in real world (as close to them anyway) conditions. Ever heard of the phrase "the more you sweat in peace, the less you bleed in war"? Training is a critical component of operational reediness, by continuously asking the military to have one hand tied behind its back don't be surprised if they fail when you most need them to perform. These are professionals, they are doing their job and that job is pretty critical I think we can all agree- at least allow them to train.

572 is total if islands, islets and rock lyings
8093 sqKm was before tsunami now its arround 7900+ sqKM and which sea warming and rising each year, its sinking and shrinking.

Mobile towers are available only on around 5 islands which are inhabited by modern world people.

Mobile towers are available ALL OVER INDIA.

Lets not be silly that security is prime important.
If security isn't of primary importance, then what is? I am an environmentalist but I am also a realist. I understand the fact that in order to have a world class military they have to be afforded the ability to test throughly. And why does one need a world class military you may ask? To protect every citizen AND animal within its borders not to mention to secure its political and economic interests abroad.

If other issues are continuously trumping security concerns a nation is heading down a very dangerous ally and India cannot afford that given the neighbourhood it lives in.

This complicates matters because, first, the weapons could not be tested in conditions in which they are likely to be used. Second, the crew do not get enough practice.

"The business of war is expensive," explained one officer. "We have to keep firing to learn to shoot straight."

Environmentalists say increasing militarisation of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is leading to clashes between soldiers and traditional livelihood systems like the Nicobarese "tuhets". But military officials argue that not only are readiness and training important, it is also difficult to find uninhabited spaces within Indian territory.

But to tell you in laymen terms, vast area of rann of Kutch is available, just in case.
The Rann of Kutch, you mean the area right next to Pakistan from where every single test and move of the IN's could be monitored by the adversary?

As I have said, there are numerous criteria beyond simply being uninhabited that the IN must look at for their test ranges and these islands in the A&N meet them the best of any location available to them- end of story. We sat behind keyboards can all keep pulling alternate testing grounds from thin air but can we give the IN some credit in that they have chosen these specific islands for a reason after exhaustive evaluations of alternatives?

IF there was a VIABLE alternative the IN would not have failed to meet its minimum practice allowance for the past few years.
Please understand this at least.

Sure. Doesn't mean we need to wipe out all the critically endangered species before figuring out how to reduce population growth to sustainable levels.

Are you interested in reasoning or just in rhetoric? :) As I said earlier, there are 572 islands, a few can be spared for missile testing.

Precisely. You are asking the military to do a job, give them the tools to do so otherwise be clear to the people of India that you will willingly compromise on the Military's operational readiness for the sake of environmental reasons. Let the people decide if this is agreeable to them.

Sure. Doesn't mean we need to wipe out all the critically endangered species before figuring out how to reduce population growth to sustainable levels.
As if these are the only two alternatives- the testing takes place (wiping out all the birds) or the birds live peacefully, who is to say they are mutually exclusive events? This is sensationalism to say the least. We do not know that this testing is going to cause anything like the extinction of any species.
