Many developed countries of the world do not allow mandatory retirement in normal circumstances, except for certain jobs requiring mental and physical fitness, like military jobs. In countries like Pakistan, everyone has to retire at a certain age, including judges. But the politicians are an exception. They do not retire; come what may, even if they have their scions to take the mantle of leadership from them. Even the gentleman appointed to hold general elections, the toughest job, has crossed 85. Some people think that he was appointed to keep him under pressure for political end. And he has demonstrated that he can be pressurized.
The retirement is now a subject of discussion in the developed world. The abdication of Pope Benedict XVI citing old age being the major factor for his decision has given a reason to think that in the present age of technology, leadership capacity can be impaired by old age. The analysts have started to think that aging often has enormous effects on people's personalities and cognitive function. Some leaders can maintain their vitality and abilities into extreme old age, but after enough time in office, a leader's performance probably will decline, perhaps precipitously.

same problem in india mate.i also think that there should be a retirement age for them.(perhaps 70).

also one more problem is their pasts.you see people like mush, manmohan,LK advani and many others can never forget partition and they always carry it with them.

if we want to improve our relations we need a new gen of politicians, who dont have this burden.

also in general, the young and middle aged politicians know more about the present requirements and perhaps will be more open than the older ones.

An 85 Years old leader was 21 at the time of creation of Pakistan (85-64) and his perception of politics is likely to be strong influenced by events of partitions, therefore such candidates are less likely to break ice and move forward. Same afflicts the leaders on Indian side!
