Is it possible to use WS-15 on JF-17 or is it simply too big for JF-17 ?

Latest info is L-15 is a Mach 1.6 and the AI-225 afterburner gives it max 8400kg thrust. I doubt the combat radius is 550km. Given its ferry range is 3100km. Definitely comparable to FC-1.

It will be a combo of trainer Plus fighter/ attacker. Ultimate cost saver for small airforce.

In the video, the chief designer says that L-15 is an advanced trainer and can be converted into an attack aircraft. There is no mention of it being a fighter jet. You may be mistaken on that.

How is it ultimate Cost saver? the price is close or equal to FC-1 while FC-1 is in advance Testing Phase in China along side J-10/J-20 there is no spot and sight for L-15 to be Attacker. And if Cost is the concern for certain countries variants such as F-7(BGI) and JL-9 would cost much lesser.

I think you have mistaken the term attacker with ground attacker aircraft. If L-15 shares many characteristic of a 4th / 4.5th with digital FBW,LERX, high turbofan thrust given it lighter weight to train the fighter pilot. Do yOu think it has problem converting into a basic fighter? Think abt it, budget countries like tarzania or Namibia , do they really need a fighter with datalink, strong EW and high performance radar plus AWACS support? All this need considerable amount of time and training to achieve competency. Given the threat they are surrounded. They are just happy to have a basic L-15 with great agility for dogfight and basic BVRAAM.

That is the reason why J-7 is such a popular fighter in 3rd world. L-15 combine trainer and fighter/ attacker is the idea new fighter jet for them.

So maybe L-15, JF-17 can be poor mans non-stealthy F-35, multi-role fighter.

You do not buy extra trainer to do the job... Budget countries always has problem training/converting their fighter pilot. As I mention BUDGET, do not expect them to get the trainer and then fighter varies.

You see CATIC is never interested to develp a 2 seater JF-17. It probably will still come out but not in 1-2yrs time, only years after L-15 captured a significant market.. L-15 is getting operational this end of the year.

L-15 is far more efficient than JL-9 despite a higher price tag but you get
-FBW
-high thrust turbofan which saves fuel
-more advance aerodynamic/LERX
-longer range, higher weapon payload and more hardpoint.

JF-17 utilise a Russian engine, Russian is know hard to please and you are competing with Russia product with JF-17.
L-15 which uses a Ukraine engine will be more business friendly. Ukraine will be more than happy to sell you more engines.
L-15 already has a co-seat, eliminate the trainer option. You are training fighter pilots while at the same time, it can be pressed into attacker/fighter with little cost. You kill 2 birds with a stone.

It is too big for JF-17.

There is a possibility that it may be installed on J-10s in the future.

Worry not, as a 100KN WS-13 version is already in development.

The Chief Designer Zhang Hong @5: 43 of the vid mentioned that L-15 has incorporated both adavanced trainer and jet fighter designs. So

Are you that proud about importing superior hardware? I recall the Chinese members here feeling humiliated every time they have to import arms... They felt so terrible, they decide to domestically produce a replica to satisfy their nationalist miitary demands. Do Indians feel the same way?

Well we are practical. China also imports what it can get, the bad thing no not EU and US is selling to them. example they get jet engines from Russia.

At the same time they are also building military complex, so are we. It is other story that we are at different maturity level.

Example Agni missile, Pinaka etc.

So at the core it is all same.

Now about your proud, yeah wants wrong with that? Countries defence needs takes precedence over pride. There is no point having pride at the risk of security, because at the time of war, your a$$ will get kicked and there will be no pride left.

Both Pakistan and China will love to get Rafale if this can, so keep away that BS.

China is looking to Africa and the Middle East to buy its JF-17 Thunder fighter jet, and anticipates countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Sudan, Venezuela, Turkey and Sri Lanka ordering 300 aircraft over the next five years.

A spokesman from China National Aero-Technology Import & Export Corporation (CATIC) told Flightglobal that, "In the next five years, CATIC intends to sell up to 300 JF-17s to several countries in Africa and the Middle East".

"CATIC sales and customer support teams are highly motivated and CATIC is looking forward to making the upcoming years fantastic for the JF-17 and its users."

The Chengdu Aircraft Industries Corporation (CAC) of China and the Pakistan Air Force and Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) jointly developed the aircraft, which is currently flying with the Pakistan Air Force. The latter has 150 on order but may buy up to 200.

Countries regarded as possible buyers include the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Venezuela and Turkey. Serbia is also reportedly considering the type for its fighter requirement, Flightglobal reports.

According to Jane’s Sentinel Security Assessment, Sudan is believed to be modernising its air force through alliances with Pakistan, Russia and China. In 2005 it signed a military cooperation agreement with Pakistan, with some subsequent reports alluding to Sudan intending to purchase 12 JF-17 aircraft.

Flightglobal quotes an industry source in Pakistan as saying that Chinese/Pakistani sales efforts have made “considerable progress” since the aircraft was demonstrated during the November 2011 Dubai air show. Dubai was the aircraft’s Middle East debut, with one flying and two static display aircraft. At the air show the JF-17’s manufacturers said it was a third of the cost of an F-16. Marketing efforts are shared between both China and Pakistan as the aircraft is built in both countries.

Flightglobal’s source said that discussions are underway with eight or nine countries interested in buying the JF-17, who have given a rough idea of how many aircraft they want.

In 2010 it was reported that Egypt was interested in co-producing the JF-17 for the Egyptian Air Force. Earlier reports indicated that Bangladesh, Iran and Nigeria were identified as potential customers. Meanwhile, last week Pakistan offered the JF-17 to Indonesia under an industry collaboration deal.

The FC-1 Xialong/JF-17 Thunder programme was launched in 1991 after the United States cancelled development of the Chengdu Super-7 following the 1989 Tianamen Square incident. Collaboration with Pakistan began in 1995, leading to a joint development contract in June 1999. The aircraft first flew in August 2003 and the first JF-17 squadron was inducted into the Pakistan Air Force in February 2010.

The aircraft has a design service life of 4000 flight hours or 25 years. It can carry up to 3600 kg (8000 lb) of ordnance in addition to its twin-barrel 23 mm cannon. It is powered by a Russian RD-93 turbofan, a variant of the RD-33 used on the MiG-29. However, China is developing the more reliable and powerful WS-13 engine to replace the RD-93. A glass cockpit features an electronic flight instrument system with wide-angle head-up display and three colour multifunction displays.
