Canistered Missile Launchers for MR-SAM Developed - To Replace IAF's S-125 Neva/Pechora Missiles

You're referring to the launch vehicles i.e. Tatras (or something in that category)sir ?

Yes, that's also a problem for Akash, the limited mobility. Akash however was mounted on tracked platforms too, but I had the impression that that Barak 8 could be as mobile as the other Israeli missile systems on 6x6 trucks or smaller trailers.

I am pretty sure something like the below will be used

+I wonder if you saw the latest Akash test launches sir, no longer from the trailer but on a 6X6 Tatra like the Spyder.

The vertical launch units of the LR-SAM, have already been built into INS Kolkata and the MF-STAR [multifunction surveillance and threat alert radar] is in place for missile guidance - All they need to do is take delivery of the missile from DRDO, load it and fire!
It is not as simple as to say lets load n fire. Yes VLS units and radar is in the boat from start everyone knows it. What I am stating is that by mid or end 2015 it will be fired from Kolkata destroyer only for which final installation is going on. Thank you.

I am a bit confused between these LR-SAM and MR-SAM variants - An ER (extended range) variant of the LR-SAM/Barak 8 is also under development, which will see the missiles maximum range increased to 100 km. - is it the same on which DRDO is working? - but then it's reported to have a maximum range of 100 km.
Don't confuse between naval ER SAM and original Long range SAM for air force as both are different. However one thing common between these two is DRDO. It's DRDO which is developing BARAK ER Sam for Kolkata class follow on destroyers, it will be installed on Kolkata class boats also but during midlife upgrade only. This was naval version ER sam. Now coming to air force version very long range Sam. DRDO is developing a missile for air force and ground units with a range of minimum 150 to maximum around 180-200 kms. In same class of HQ9 but way lower than AAD and PAD. Hope it clears. Thank you.

The new Akash TELs are compact .

C-17 was a necessary buy but that's leave that to one side, no point in going down that line, what is done is done and that is that.

4 years or so is not that long to wait and I don't see India going to war anytime before then so no need to worry about these things.

Yeah, C-17 is good, that is too much money!!!! Its $ 6 billion!!! We could have buy so many battaries of S-400 (12 battalions) or PAC-3 (600 missiles !!!) for that amount that along with MRSAM, QRSAM and Akash, any fighter pilot would have $hit in their uniforms even before thinking to enter Indian Air force.

Anyway leave, whats is done is done!!!

I am just waiting for MRSAM.

Prahar and Nirbhay have a range of 150 and 1500 km respectively. Mobility is not an issue for them. SAMs however need highly mobile platforms.

Hey buddy can you state the reason why the I.N. didn't go for the U.S. made SM-2 which has a range of more than 150 kms plus many primary navies use it as their primary S.A.M.???

Same reason the IAF hasn't gone for the S400- they (and DRDO) want to "indigenise" as much as possible rightly or wrongly that is their mantra now.

Anyway any missiles of this kind coming from the US would have come with its own set of restrictions and India is very wary of getting into bed with the Americans for just this reason.

This is an old Rafael mockup. All IAF SPYDER launchers (and support vehicles) are TATA trucks.

Expensive yes but they add a lot to the Indian airlift capacity. You could have spent that $5.8 billion on SAMs but without the strategic airlift capability to transport them and other equipment around what good are they? A military can only function through good logistics.

It should have we signed the contract in mid 2008. Thats more than 6.5 years.

So now we have two modern SAM, one is Akash and another SPYDER. I seriously think we need MRSAM urgently. Our mid range SAM systems are very old and Akash (25 km) and SPYDER (35 km) has short ranges.

Our Pechora and OSA missiles are very old.
I dont understand how the Akaash is Modern ? Without any active seeker?

Only active seeker doesn't make a SAM modern. It has latest command and controls, softwares., advanced anti-jamming capabilities. And above all it works well in modern heavy EW environment, so its modern.

For working in heavy EW environment, it need active seeker. BTW, on the other hand see its weight, give me any modern SAM which has same weight with same range.
