C17 Globemaster Deal Done

We should have more than 10 such birds for sure. Glad it can land with 30 tonnes in Ladakh.

According to me the best idea is to rapidly increase transport helicopter in Indian army because we cannot build airstrips everywhere to support such huge aircraft but yeah we can build many heli-pads in critical and distant areas which can be suitable to hold beasts like Mi26t which can carry upto 90 troops. Funny thing is C130j can hold upto 92 troops...

Indian army should purchase at-least a couple hundred of these for its mountain division. They will also be helpful in disaster relief. I mean IAF will purchase 12-15 of Mi26t or Chinook (i support Mi26t) but this number is too less. I mean its fine for IAF but IA should have a couple hindred of these choppers and in all around a 1000 choppers in its aviation wing considering the size of our army and considering the level of infrastructure we have especially along our borders and disputed areas we need more and more choppers for reconnaissance and rapid mobilization.

Mi-26 is not useful in high altitude areas and usually has problems in high winds.Besides c-17 can carry main battle tanks lol.
This is a whole new level in terms of strategic airlift.

IAF wants a total of about 30 of these along with some 20-25 C-130Js and 15-20 A-400Ms and 56 C-27J

IAF could really go upto 26-30 C17s, upto 18 C130Js (as of present requirement), 45 MRTAs and 56 turboprop
transports (yet undecided, could be C27J or C295).

No plans for A400M thus far.

There is a projected requirement of 25-30 C-17s for the IAF by 2020-22. C-130Js for SOF ops will stand at 12 here is always the possiblity of the IAF inducting basic transport versions not to mention there is the distinct possiblity of the BSF, ITBP, ICG and the IN getting the C-130 (the later 2 in the form of specialised versions). Then there will be 56 C-27Js or C-295s with the option for 40-50 more.

If IAF wants to induct 30 C-17s, than the have to induct them fast since if further orders are not given, there is the chance that it's production line gets closed:

Deadline pressure on IAF to order more C-17s

No, dude. Thats just a way to pressurise IAF to order more C17s, not letting us have time to
think if we really need them or not - but we will order them only when we like.

C'mon, do you think US will go ahead to close the line even if they recieve multi-billion order
for 10s of C17s, regardless in the nick of time?? Boeing shall never allow that.

This is a whole new level in terms of strategic airlift.

It can only carry a single MBT and not to such altitudes, only IFVs, or tank destroyers.

So many C17s are doubtful, since we don't have such a big requirement for strategic heavy lift roles, not to mention that his beast is also very costly. The current requirement for C130Js is fullfilled with the 2nd order, for the 2nd squadron that will be raised, so no need for more special ops versions, if at all, in weather control, or IFR roles.

No plans for A400M thus far.

Which is the said part, IAF completely underestimating the importance of such an aircraft, the simple fact that several NATO countries, Japan, Russia and Ukraine are going for such an aircraft should make IAF think about it.

My favourite fleet mix would be like this:

Saras - 1.2t payload

C295 - 9t payload

MTA - 18t payload (C130J - 20t but for special ops mainly)

A400M - 37t (+ A330 - 45t payload, both as MRTTs to replace the IL 76 transport fleet, while adding a good number of tankers too)

C17 - 77t payload (10 are more than enough for the strategic and some tactical heavy lift roles)

The best mix for IAF with a good balance of cost-effective utility aircrafts (Saras, C295, MTA) and advanced tactical and strategic aircrafts (C130J, A400 & A330 MRTTs, C17).

Why are you guys buying from U.S.A? they offer no TOT like french or russians, I am sure DRDO could learn alot from those countries and later use it to build your own airlifters...:agree:

just an idea..

Immediate requirement.

DRDO and HAL are too slow and bureaucratic to be able to come up with an airlifter in anything less than 15 years alone. There will be a thousand clearances needed, satisfaction of all corrupt politicians and top brass needed, then cabinet will take ages and by the time the project starts, world air forces will be using spaceships across galaxies.

So it is better to buy such platforms for now while be develop smaller and easier to manufacture medium transport aircraft with Russia. :)

An aircraft of this size is impossible for india to produce locally.
Not even in the next 15 years.

But i do recall a news about central wing tanks on C-17 were outsourced to india...cant be sure though...

bhai ain't C-17s meant to replace IL-76s???

Well if there is a radical change in the government, or maybe a new regime, then it is very much possible but that itself is unlikely.

For now, we are focused on manufacturing parts of the aircraft here that are outsourced already under Boeing's contract with HAL.

Besides, HAL will be installing Indian-made communication software and equipment on board the C-17s and C-130s. That's how we circumvented the LSA agreements.

They are, but I meant it in the payload area of 30 to 50t, which is similar to what our IL 76 can carry. Not to mention that the C17 is too expensive to replace the IL 76 1 on 1. For a single C17 we can get 1 x A400 + 1 x A330, while both could be used in transport (tactical and strategic) and tanker roles.
