Pakistan has discussed with Russia the possibility of purchasing the Russian-made RD-93 engine for its JF-17 fighter jets, according to Pakistan’s prime minister for foreign affairs, Sartaj Aziz. Pakistan currently sources the Russian power plants from China. Aziz, who spoke at a March 1 Defense Writers Group breakfast, added that in addition to JF-17s, Pakistan would have liked to purchase 18 additional Lockheed Martin-made F-16s, to replace those it has used intensively in tribal ...

will china be happy if Pakistan bypasses them.for Russian it makes sence to supply the engines directly to pakistan.
i think the reason the Pakistanies want to get the jets from Russia directly is becaue of some maintenance issues with the engine.

May be Pak is tired of giving commission to Chinese, instead they buy from them directly. It seems story is not ended at 8 F16 , more are coming .

As the F-35 starts entering service with USAF in large number, surplus F-16s will be made available as EDA. Possible Pakistan could acquire these for minimum cost.

Pakistan should go for RD93MA 100KN engine instead of old rd 93. Then direct purchase from Russia is 100% fruit full. What's fun in purchasing same old low power smokey engine

Who said the F16 are to be replaced we just did a MLU with brand new engine and spare integration. Also we should place a decent order for engines for some machine work on the F16 rather then keep flying the planes and clocking high mileage

150 JF17 thunder engines are needed standalone for spare and current demands for the Production of Thunders, the Thunder platform has requirements for PAF and other world airforces so its a different stream

Two separate planes / production lines and 2 different issues

We obviously have to replace 250-300 F7 or Mirage platform planes so it is logical we get 150 engines ordered to continue production to retire old planes

It would make sense to have 150 RD-33 engines in hand , as we need to build new planes to retire old planes

I personally wish we had 3 options for the Engine power plant for Thunder

  • a) RD-93 (Block I, Block II) - 150 Engines (Spare , new planes , international orders) (Russian)
  • c) F100-229 engines (Block IV), 2 seater - 50 Engines (USA) (Order of ~ 50 to 75 engines)
It would be good to fully use the modular nature of the Thunder and provided a chance we should examine possibility of P&W F100-229 for Thunders, Diversify the engine from multiple vendors , and best part is we have folks who perhaps know how to handle the engine already on F16 platform

The plane was meant to be modular and multipurpose so having power plants from 2-3 International source would be healthy for the platform

Why Pakistan air force don't use the jf-17 in bombing instead of the f-16 this way they save the viper for the real threat?.
