why didn't you bring this up before Myanmar started becoming more western friendly?
Lets say that I didn't have in depth knowledge about this country before. Even now I don't know a whole lot. But from what I know, it looks like democracy will solve nothing in Myanmar, because the problem is not Army Junta or democracy, but Bamar/Burman refusal to accept minority rights. Suu Kyi is a Bamar and caters more for Bamar popular demands.
Part of the reason why Army junta was in power and are still in power (most elected officials including Thien Sein are former army officers), is that since end of WW II, the country have been unstable and insurgency wars going on in many corners of the country as shown in maps above, and these insurgency's are still continuing.
By showing a facade of democracy, Bamars want to get out of China and Indian monopolization of the economy and get FDI from the rest of the free world, so they can further consolidate their position. I think it would be mistake for the USA/West to fall for this charm offensive using Suu Kyi as a friendly face, Myanmar isolation must continue till they resolve their issues with minorities satisfactorily and all insurgencies are ended as a result.
Bamar majority of Burma and its leadership must demonstrate that they can effectively lead entire nation and administer their country, before the isolation is fully lifted and they are given the opportunity to participate in world economy.
