The Akbarabadi mosque row took a new twist on Monday with the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha (ABHM) urging the Delhi High Court for a direction to demolish the mosque coming up over the Subhash Park site and permit the construction of a temple or a gurudwara there. “Only Hindu, Jain temple or a gurudwara can be allowed to be built there. Some articles had been planted after removing relics of Hindu and Jain temples,” claimed a petition filed by ABHM. A Bench headed by acting chief justice AK Sikri will hear the plea on July 25.
ABHM also moved a petition seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against Matia Maha MLA Shoaib Iqbal, several government officials and police for not cordoning off the site near Jama Masjid.
“It was also found that prayers were being delivered from the illegally fabricated structure,” said ABHM Vice President SS Omji alleged.
The court on July 20 had asked the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to take over the possession of the site and ascertain if the Akbarabadi Masjid did exist there.
