British olympic team success and news

Rio Olympics 2016: GB's Laura Trott defends omnium title to win historic fourth gold

Trottt wins historic fourth Olympic gold
Laura Trott has become the first British woman to win four Olympic gold medals by defending her omnium title.
Velodrome-composite-medium_trans++qVzuuqpFlyLIwiB6NTmJwfSVWeZ_vEN7c6bHu2jJnT8.jpg

The world champion, 24, moves ahead of Charlotte Dujardin, who equalled her record of three Olympic golds with victory in the individual dressage.

"I can't believe it. I didn't expect that at all," said a tearful Trott, who matched her team pursuit and omnium victories from London 2012 in Rio.

She scored 230 points to win the title by 24 from American Sarah Hammer.

Trott, from Cheshunt, had taken a commanding 24-point advantage into the 100-lap points race, which concluded the six-discipline omnium, and rode a tactically-astute race, closing down attacks from her rivals and picking up points in the 10 intermediate sprints.

"I couldn't have done it without everyone, especially Paul Manning my coach. He puts up with me on a daily basis and I am over the moon," added Trott.

Reaction to Laura Trott's fourth Olympic gold

Olympic cycling world champion Victoria Pendleton: "Laura Trott is incredibly tough and tenacious. She might look fragile but it is the complete opposite of what is going on inside. She always pushes herself to the absolute limit."

Laura Trott's GB team-mate Joanna Rowsell Shand on BBC One: "Laura has got a 100% record in the Olympics - she rode twice in London and two here in Rio and she has won all four. That must be a record in itself."

Olympic cycling champion Chris Boardman on BBC TV: "Laura didn't put a foot wrong in the entire race. She did everything that she needed to do, didn't panic and the battle behind her played right into her hands."

@waz, when I first heard the name of our great dressage queen Charlotte Dujardin in the London 2012 olympics I thought she was French. @Vergennes @Louiq XIV :D
She isn't. The French are no where near us lol. :p:

"Dujardin". It's sure that she has some french ancestry. Just like the german minister of interior "De Maizière".

Anyway,congratulations for your medals,well deserved.

@Hamartia Antidote @KAL-EL Just bravo,you rule. :tup:

Can't wait bro, let's just hope our lads pull it off!

Thank you my dear friend. We wish the same for the US, oh and watch your back, we're coming. :p:

We got a bronze as Katie Martin battled for third place.
Meanwhile, Becky James is battling for gold in the final right now, even though she is trailing at the moment. She is guaranteed a silver medal at least, but she still has a good chance to get a gold. Fingers crossed.

Unfortunately she lost to Germany's Christina Vogel, so it's still a silver medal for her. Which is bad. But the battle was very tight indeed

Amy Tinkler has become just the second British female gymnast to win an individual Olympic medal after she claimed bronze in the women’s floor event.

The 16-year-old, who remarkably sat her GCSE PE exam last month, wowed the judges with a stunning routine that saw her pip Italy’s Vanessa Ferrari into third place.

‘It has been incredible – I can’t believe it. I’m in total shock. I don’t really know what to say,’ said Tinkler who follows in the illustrious footsteps of Beth Tweddle, a bronze medalist in the uneven bars four years ago.

Who is Amy Tinkler?
* 16 years old from Bishop Auckland
* Took up gymastics ages just two
* Coached by her mum after joining South Durham Gymnastics Club
* First represented Team GB in her first international event in 2011, aged 11
* Floor is her specialist routine
* Won silver at the 2014 Junior European Championships
* Won gold at the 2015 British Championships
* Youngest member of Britain’s Olympic team
‘I wasn’t thinking about winning a medal. My coaches said I had nothing to lose and just to go out and enjoy it. I could hear a lot of cheers from the crowd and that helped me a lot.

She has become the youngest British Olympic medalist in 32 and just last month was sitting her GCSE exams

‘Max Whitlock and Louis Smith have inspired me so much over the years, so to have a medal like them is incredible.’

Tweddle, herself added: ‘It is amazing. The British team have worked so hard to get here. All credit to Amy for performing under such pressure.

‘To take that bronze medal today it is incredible.’

ANOTHER GOLD MEDAL FOR GREAT BRITAIN.
Jason Kenny just won a gold medal yet again as I predicted and expected, his sixth gold. Our boys and girls are showing the world they are the best. We are extending the gap with China. :)

Another medal for us in gymnastic. As our boy Wilson won a bronze medal in high bar event.

Wilson wins GB's first high bar gymnastics medal
Nile Wilson became the first Briton to win an Olympic medal in the horizontal bar by claiming bronze at Rio 2016.

The 20-year-old from Leeds, appearing in his first Games, won Britain's seventh gymnastics medal in Brazil.

Germany's Fabian Hambuechen, silver medallist at London 2012, took gold with a score of 15.766, ahead of Danell Leyva of the United States (15.500).

And securing bronze capped a remarkable week for British gymnastics in the Rio Olympic Arena.

Before Rio, Team GB had only ever claimed eight Olympic medals - two silver and six bronze - with four of those coming at London 2012.

GB's gymnastics medals at Rio 2016
GOLD: Max Whitlock Men's floor and men's pommel
SILVER: Bryony Page Women's trampoline
Louis Smith Men's pommel
BRONZE: Max Whitlock Men's all-around
Amy Tinkler Women's floor
Nile Wilson Men's horizontal bar
Starting third, Wilson moved second behind 28-year-old Hambuechen, but ahead of defending champion Epke Zonderland, who fell off the apparatus as he finished seventh.

Wilson remained in the silver-medal position until Leyva, going last in the eight-man field, overtook him.

Wilson's success came just 50 minutes after 16-year-old team-mate Amy Tinkler won bronze in the women's floor - becoming only the second British woman to win an individual gymnastics medal.

Watching Wilson's final unfold was almost too much for double gold medallist Max Whitlock

Page, who won silver in the women's trampoline, was impressed with both Wilson and Tinkler

Kenny wins gold again, his finance won, which has been posted by @mike2000 is back. The golden couple.

British cyclist Jason Kenny has equalled Chris Hoy and Steve Redgrave’s record of six golds after winning the keirin on the track in Rio.

The 28-year-old from Bolton was not the favourite in the six-man final but managed to take his third medal at this Olympics to add to the titles he won in the team and individual sprints.

It was an almost unbearably tense final. Twice the race was stopped mid-way through after riders broke the rules by passing ahead of the motorised derny. Kenny, along with the Malaysian Azizulhasni Awang, was one of the first culprits, with the current world keirin champion, Germany’s Joachim Eilers, making the illegal move on the second attempt.

The judges took painfully long to decide that the match should be re-run with all six competitors on both occasions. It was third time lucky and Kenny proved cool under pressure, crossing the line first, with Matthijs Buchli of the Netherlands second and Awang in the bronze medal position.

Hoy was 36 when he won his sixth and final gold medal in the keirin at the London games. Kenny, described this week as “Britain’s most underrated sportsman” by Cycling Weekly magazine, did not contest that race because of a short-lived ‚“one nation, one rider” rule in the competition. But he is expected to return for at least one more Olympics, raising the distinct possibility that he could become the most successful British Olympian of all time, come Tokyo.

Gile Scotts won Gold on Finn Sailing.

17 Gold medal, pulling away from China

Thanks for that bro.

Sailor Giles Scott was on a lap of honour as he picked up Team GB's 17th gold on day 11 of the Olympic Games.

The 29-year-old, from Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire, won in perfect conditions today in the men's finn event.

Towering 6ft 6in Scott :o:had an unassailable lead in the competition going in to today's sailing after success on Sunday.

BBC commentators joked that he 'looked like he was on a picnic' as he finished a comfortable second in today's race behind the USA's Caleb Paine.

Yes, well done Becky for your silver in the women's sprint and well done Katy for your bronze. Keep them coming team GB ladies, we love you!:man_in_love:

Great Britain's Becky James won her second Olympic silver of Rio 2016 by finishing second in the women's sprint.

The 24-year-old, who won silver in the keirin on Sunday, lost the first two races in the best-of-three final as Germany's Kristina Vogel won gold.

"I really wanted gold but Vogel is an incredible rider," said James.

Fellow Briton Katy Marchant beat Elis Ligtlee to take bronze, winning the first race by more than a bike length and the second by a fraction.

Jack Laugher wins Olympic silver medal in 3m springboard adding to synchro gold
23:58, 16 AUG 2016 UPDATED 00:20, 17 AUG 2016 BY ELEANOR CROOKS

Laugher added to the gold that he won with best pal Chris Mears in the synchro last week by continuing his fine form to take second spot
Jack-Laugher-in-the-Mens-3m-Springboard-Final.jpg

Jack Laugher added Olympic silver to his synchro gold with a stunning performance in the three metre springboard.

The 21-year-old stood on top of the podium with best pal Chris Mears last week and continued his form into the individual final.

But Laugher's medal-winning performance was all the more impressive considering that he almost missed the final altogether.

Three disappointing dives in Tuesday morning's semi-final left him teetering on the brink but he scraped through in the 12th and final position.

That meant Laugher dived first in the final and it worked to his advantage as he piled the pressure on his competitors with a superb display.

With the pool restored from green to a sparkling blue, he was given three scores in the 90s, including a 96.90 for his penultimate dive, a forward four-and-a-half somersaults.

But there was revenge for China's Cao Yuan, beaten into third with partner Qin Kai behind Laugher and Mears in the synchro, as he claimed gold.

Oliver Dingley produced a fine series of dives to exceed expectations with an eighth-placed finish for Ireland.

It's 20 gold for us bro. As our girls(team double) already won in womens team Finn sailing event as they lead by over 20points which means they can't be caught. It's not yet added officially simply because the final event is not yet officially over, eventhough they already won even before the final event starts. So we now got 20 golds with more to come:yahoo::chilli:

i have been watching your posts and you must be watching nothing but the olympics. how is the land of oz doing anyway?

There are nothing on...........

I got Cable TV at home and smart TV, and the only channel that I got is the Olympic channel so I got 24 hours coverage on the Olympic, otherwise I would have been watching rerun of TV shows.

Aussie got another gold last night on a sailing event. Now we have 7 gold, our medal is moving slowly

Russia is catching up too...they got another one so now they are at 12.

Yeah, they are creeping up fast..........But I don't see any event that favorite the Russian, so their tail will be dying down some how, but man, they come here with half the team, granted the other half is doping, but just imagine they came here with a full team.
