Vladimir Kruglyakov, the former (1970-1975) Commander of the 10th Operative Battle Group (Pacific Fleet) remembes:
I received the order from the Chief Commander To not allow access of the American Navy to the Indian military objects.
- On the way of American Navy stood the Soviet cruisers, destroyers and atomic submarines equipped with anti-ship missiles.
Vladimir Kruglyakov, the former (1970-1975) Commander of the 10th Operative Battle Group (Pacific Fleet) remembers:
We encircled them and I have targeted the Enterprise by missiles. I have blocked them and didnt allow enclosing to Karachi, nor to Chittagong or Dhaka.
Vladimir Kruglyakov, the former (1970-1975) Commander of the 10th Operative Battle Group (Pacific Fleet) remembers:
The Chief Commander has order me: Lift the subs when they (the Americans) appear! It was done to demonstrate, there are all the needed in Indian Ocean, including the nuclear submarines. I have lifted them, and they recognized it. Then, we intercepted the American communication.

I have heard recordings of Russian vessels conducting combat operations in lieu of the Osa's against Karachi.
The tapes are still there..(now digitized) in the naval archives at Karachi.
Russia was completely involved.

What you heard was Indian radio officers conversing with each other in fluent Russian..as communications between two ships(then) was done open MF/HF radio frequencies..Indian navy innovatively used its Russian speaking crew( Indian navy officers posted in Russia as part of the training pro-grammes).
So that inter ship communication if intercepted is not instantly decipherable.

@ karthic.
That does not seen to be very accurate. One does not have to direct an ICBM towards a target like a rocket launcher. 10 digit coordinates of the target fed into the on board computer will do the trick. As it is, most of these ICBMS are stored in underground silos which point straight up. Likewise for the SLBMs, There is very little scope of pointing these things at anybody, if they are pointing straight up.
Moreover, China of 1999 was not the China of 1971. Yes, Russia has more nuclear warheads today than China, but China has enough to stop anyone from even thinking of using them against it.
What you forget is that Russia, while it is a friendly nation, is not the USSR. Therein lies the hard fact of Indo-Russian relations in the present decade. It is essential to understand the difference between the two entities in order to be able to understand the relationship between India and Russia as it exists today and as it will be in the future.
India is indeed grateful to the USSR for keeping USA and China out of the conflict in 1971 and all the help and support when we needed it the most.

@techlahore..
It is sad that our leaders were expecting the sort of American support that was later shown to Israel in the 73 war.. Naivety knows no bounds in Pakistan's history.
