It is not Missile vs Missile here so this logic of one missile cancelling out other is total nonsense. These missiles will be used against ship and Harpoon is one the top tier missiles which has evolved several folds over time. As for cruise missiles it is always a tradeoff between speed and maneuverability. Subsonic missiles are in class of their own which is why no military has parted ways with them. It is pertinent to mention that supersonic missiles have been out there since 1980s and are not a latest addition but subsonic missiles were given preference. Something to ponder.

the harpoon is a great ground base missile for Taiwan. this will give them the ability to sink Chinese LPDs, LST, LSM and civilian ships pressed into troops and supply duty in a future war vs Taiwan.

terrain and distance matter. china would have to do a amphibious and Air dropped to invade Taiwan. these operations would require a lot of seaborne support.

example a 1st way of 100,000 soldiers would needs a ton of logistical support.

the 2nd wave of ships would have to be mostly food, fuel, ammo and a few troops. till they secured a big beach head and either build a large docking or take one. remember taiwan has a population of plus 23m ppl.

china needs to greatly increase it Aerial refueling capabilities. same with it's amphibious and Air Transport capabilities.

1st they have to knocked out Taiwan's Air forces and air defense. storm the beaches.
