Breaking: VW opening new mega plant in Turkey!

Totally disagree. A quality Turkish car for middle-class could have a sizeable market share. The car producers in Turkey already making huge profit by just selling foreing brands. They just don't care about being it Turkish brand or not. Another word, why invest billions to make a car "Turkish". Govt. wants them to act nationalistic other than racionalist.
In Turkey, you already know most of the middle class buy second-hand cars... Of course with some tax reduction it possible to make people brought brand new cars, but still we are not China. So I will say it again, Koc holding can make a new car brand, but they dont want to because they see it as ''commercial suicide'' I know goverment wants them to act nationalist but the importing thing for them is the ''money'' not some sentimental feelings..

Article says that labour costs in Bulgaria are actually lower but that VW still went for Turkey. But the government is also probably going to buy many of the new higher end cars itself.

Anyway good decision for VW and a great success for Manisa.

it is not all about labor cost.. its also about finding the qualified labor.. its easy to find thousands of automobile workers in Turkey who already has experience..
Bulgaria is also full of corruption. i personally would never buy a car which is assembled in Bulgaria

The foreign brands make a profit because they are established in dozens of markets, which help cover fixed and R&D costs. A Turkish brand would only have a fraction of the Turkish market to cover their entire cost structure. If a Turkish brand is established it will require that a vast majority of the production is exported to Europe before break-even is reached. The marketing and market entry cost of such an adventure would be astronomical (Imagine to compete with VW, AUDI, BMW etc. in Germany). Unfortunately, a Turkish car is just bad business, and the Turkish companies know this.

Makes you wonder how a tiny nation like Georgia with a population of 4 million can do this but we can't. They've also went to war with the Russians 10 years ago so that's just sad.

It is now official: VW is going to set up a new car factory in Turkey.

Stand: 22.07.2019 18:08 Uhr

Lange wurde spekuliert, jetzt ist die Entscheidung gefallen: Das neue VW-Werk wird in der Türkei gebaut - offenbar nach Zugeständnissen aus Ankara. Saudi-Arabien und Bulgarien gehen leer aus.

Well done to Turkey, we should import some cars from you, until we InshaAllah get our own plant.

Dis-ag-ree! A nice design, middle-class affordable sedan or hatchback would sell like cheese and breads.

Very patriotic or nationalistic of you to stick to your opinion. But no matter how many times you deny it the truth and facts are already said. You can still see ppl drive tofas in Turkey. Even Sahin and kartal. Taxi drivers in Antalya buy dacia, fiat and Renault. When you ask them why. They’re cheap is the answer. No comfort, no security. But it’s paid off in 2-3 years.

Perhaps we could develop a car to the Turkish market with existing brands. Maybe even so special that it would be exported.

You haven't understood the concept of e-vehicles. Producing them is the easy task. Building the national infrastructure to make these cars affordable and practical is the biggest hurdle. That's why we're not only talking about manufacturing an e-automobile in Turkey. The consortium is at the same time planning, organizing and developing the infrastructure for the entire country. Otherwise it would be a waste of money and time.

The government is anything else than a Koc fan. Why you think Erdogan would support a Koc car brand?

Simple. Koc is ,most probably, has most experience. You should understand that today Turkish Goverment wants a Turkish car brand, desperately... I said ''desperately'' because turkish companies dont want that. And this ''New Turkish Car Brand'' is so important for Turkish goverment and Erdogan, it is not just about economy, it is about prestige. It is about votes they can earn with this way. So If lets say Koc wants to design and produce this new car, Turkish goverment will support this, because they dont have a choice.

You can give Milgem or Anadolu project to another shipyard instead of Koc. There is so many alternatives for that. But about a new Turkish car they dont have any alternatives.

Koc has many partnerships/JV with existing car brands and working on an competing car brand wont be good for their business and partnerships. It makes little sense for them to get involved.

Someone should have bought Volvo or Saab when it was available instead of starting from scratch.

I am surprised that the contract was not given to BMC.
