May they rest in peace, this anti-cop mentality is growing in the US, generally among less educated folks, that support reckless behavior of all kinds. On an young adult level, these college students believe they can disrespect, taunt and yell at cops if they get caught violating the law or in possession of drugs. And if cops try to be reasonable, and it doesn't work, then they cry 'Police brutality!'. People think their behavior is justified and that they should be permitted to have 'my way or highway' mentality. And this is sad growing trend.
Then you have the situation with people resisting arrest, not just blacks. Or making threats that they are armed and are reaching out for their weapons. What foreigners need to understand, is the US is unlike a foreign nation. For example, in some Arab nations, you can talk or walk near the cops all you want, even dispute a matter with them, they will indulge in long discussion with you and settle the matter. There is no case where cops are in any risk from ordinary population, besides targets of terrorism. This is because the culture is different. In the US, not everyone is stable in the head, and you have to suspect the worse from ordinary people, because there are many random acts of violence that could arise from simple altercations. This is why you must comply with law enforcement through and fully. And if you make threats, they are bound to take you seriously, because police officers have been shot dead before.
So you can't complain about 'trigger happy' police, even though they aren't, when there is culture where you can't trust everybody, there are people with criminal pasts that aren't mentally stable and will try to screw over police if they think they can get away with it. The attitudes towards police aren't good among a large minority either.
Now regarding the shootings, I believe lethal force should be last resort, but then again, it's only a matter of seconds between life and death situation, you can't play guessing game with someone making threats, that has a concealed weapon. And regarding the ambush, many cops were killed/injured because they were stationary in a road block or something of that sort near the demonstrations that took place. And hence the gunmen used some DMR type rifle, or assault with scope, doesn't seem like sniper rifle.
