Sherry Rehman appointed Pakistan's Ambassador to the US

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader and MNA Sherry Rehman has been appointed Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, Express 24/7 reported.

The appointment comes after Husain Haqqani was asked to resign by Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani in the wake of the Memogate scandal. Gilani has approved the appointment.

Media reports circulating late Tuesday night had suggested that Iffat Imran Gardezi would be the temporary replacement for Haqqani. Gardezi is the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Pakistan Embassy in Washington and assists the ambassador in the overall functioning of the Embassy.

Rehman was sworn in as Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting on March 31, 2008, and resigned from office on March 14, 2009.

Sherry Rehman appointed Pak Ambassador to US ISLAMABAD: Moving quickly to fill a vacant ambassador post in Washington left by the resignation of Husain Haqqani, Pakistan unexpectedly appointed a former information minister and outspoken human rights campaigner as its new envoy.

Sherry Rehman is also serving as the chairperson of Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS).

"The prime minister is pleased to appoint Sherry Rehman as the new ambassador to the United States," said spokesman for the Prime Minister's office.

Haqqani resigned on Tuesday, days after a Pakistani-American businessman accused him of being behind a memo that accused the Pakistani military of plotting a coup in May.
