Russia has mostly been bombing FSA and other anti-Assad factions,which allowed ISIS to take control of their territory.

I don't believe in coincidences; the rebels do not have the pin point skills and abilities to kill such a high profile Iranian General Hossein Hamedani. I am guessing there are much bigger players involved here. Having said this the killing of this general is a huge blow for Iran as he was a central Iranian figure in the Syrian war. I am also assuming that there were other key Republican Guard figures who might have died during this 'Rebel Operation'.

ISIS also captured many areas in north Aleppo before Russians came in and while U.S and Co were bombing them, which means, based on this lame logic, they were also acting as ISIS air force.

is this the official IRGC version of events, car crash, not IS ambush ?

if true, 100,000 NDF is a significant number, does this include the shabiha militias ?

what is a rough estimate of the total non-isis "rebel" fighter numbers ?

and finally, of them, how many of them are "secular" pro US and pro democracy legit Syrian citizens and forces defectors militia ? (basically, how many are non-islamist non-jihadi regular aggrieved fighters ?)

Yes, also already confirmed by Iran's chief of national security council.

It has nothing to do with 'shabiha'. The whole Shabiha thing is greatly exaggerated by the opposition forces. NDF is a newly established force which recruits those volunteers that are willing to fight against nutjobs on the opposite side.

The numbers vary greatly, but many of those non-IS rebels are not any better than ISIS itself. The most important one is Al-Nusra group, which is official branch of Al-Qaeda in Syria, the strongest non-ISIS force on the ground which is allied to many other powerful Islamist 'non-Alqaeda' forces.

Almost non-existent.They had significant numbers in the beginning, but most either defected to extremist groups, gave up fighting or died. There are still some groups, but their power is small compared to groups like Nusra terrorists. Well there are reports of two more senior Iranian commanders Hamid Mokhtarband and Brigadier General Farshad Hassounizadeh have been killed. Looks like Iran is suffering heavy causalities.

Two senior commanders of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have been killed in Syria, according to Iranian media.

Hamid Mokhtarband and Brigadier General Farshad Hassounizadeh died while assisting the Syrian government's battle against ISIL on Monday, reported the Tasnim and Fars news agencies and Press TV.

Their deaths come after another top commander, General Hossein Hamadani, was killed on Thursday night on the outskirts of Aleppo.

Press TV reported that Hassounizadeh was in Syria to "defend the holy shrine of Hazrat Zeinab, the granddaughter of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), in the country’s capital of Damascus."

The Islamic Republic denies having any military forces in Syria, but says it offers "military advice" to Assad's forces in their fight against "terrorist groups".

An IRGC statement on Friday said that Hamadani had been advising the Syrian military and defend Shia shrines in the country.

Iran is the main regional ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and has provided military and economic support during Syria's four-year-old civil war.

Assad's other longtime ally, Russia, launched its air campaign in September, saying it would target ISIL. Its planes, however, have also hit other rebel groups opposed to Assad, including groups backed by Washington.

More than 250,000 people have been killed in Syria's civil war, which began in 2011.

Yeah more than 8 Iranian Generals have been killed so far in the conflict,so its not difficult to guess how many foot soldiers and low rank officers have been liquidated so far....
