what do you actually mean by unpopular? because in reality Assad and Maduro have at least 50% support in their countries, but their opposition is sizeable(and the West magnifies it- good example: during Ahmadinejad's era when there were protests, opposition people fielded a protest of 500K people, but some weeks later the non-opposition protests mustered a million or 2 in their own counter protest, but the West will only show you the opposition's protests in their media).

Especially if they are willing to kill their own countrymen
