Boycotting our goods will damage ties, China’s state media warns India

Press Trust of India, New Delhi, Aug 9 2017, 17:24 IST
The government today said anti- dumping duty is in force on 93 products including chemicals and machinery items imported from China.

The other Chinese products on which India has imposed this duty include steel and other metals; fibres and yarn; rubber or plastic; electric and electronics; and consumer goods.

"Anti-dumping duty is in force on 93 products concerning imports from China," Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in a written reply to Rajya Sabha.

In addition, 40 cases concerning imports from China have been initiated by the Directorate General of Anti-Dumping & Allied Duties, she said.

Countries impose anti-dumping duties to guard domestic industry from surge in below-cost imports.

Anti-dumping steps are taken to ensure fair trade and provide a level-playing field to the domestic industry.

They are not a measure to restrict import or cause an unjustified increase in cost of products.

In a separate reply, she said India's imports from China in 2016-17 have marginally dipped to USD 61.28 billion as compared to USD 61.7 billion in 2015-16.

India's exports to China include iron ore, cotton yarn, petroleum products, copper and chemicals, while imports include telecom instruments, electronic components, computer hardware, industrial machinery and chemicals.

Dubbing senior RSS leader Indresh Kumar's remarks that Indians should boycott Chinese products as "hypocritical", AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has dared the Sangh to ask Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discontinue the bilateral trade between India and China.

Kumar had recently said Indians should boycott Chinese products and focus on "swadeshi" goods. This is the hypocrisy of the RSS. If he (Kumar) really believes in what he is saying, Modi is also a swayamsevak. Let him go the prime minister. Let the RSS go and tell the government to put an end to bilateral trade with China immediately," Owaisi told reporters here yesterday.

The Hyderabad MP said the Sangh should also tell the government that there should be no sponsorship of any Chinese company for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) or the Indian Premier League (IPL).

"Many products such as iphones are made in China and sold in India. Can that be stopped?" he asked.

Kumar, at a programme in Lucknow on the eve of Raksha Bandhan, had said, "The government will deal with China in its own way, but we must boycott the Chinese goods."

Owaisi alleged that the RSS, by using such a "rhetoric", was trying to divert the attention of the people from the real issues.

"China has said it has reduced the number of soldiers (at the Dokalam border in Sikkim). What is the stand of the government? Why is the government keeping quiet on that?" the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief asked.

A trade war seems to be looming between India and China after New Delhi imposed anti-dumping duties on 93 Chinese products amidst a military standoff in Doklam area, two state media reports here said today.

An article in The Global Times, part of the ruling Communist Party's publication group, urged Chinese firms to "reconsider the risks" of investing in India and warned New Delhi to be "prepared for the possible consequences for its ill-considered action."

The article said that China "could easily retaliate" with restrictions on Indian products, but added that it "doesn't make much economic sense" for the country.

It cited figures from the Indian embassy in China to show that Indian exports fell by 12.3 per cent year-on-year to USD 11.75 billion while India's imports from China rose by 2 per cent to USD 59 billion, resulting in a trade deficit of USD 47 billion.

According to the Indian Commerce Ministry, the trade deficit with China last year mounted to over USD 52 billion when the bilateral trade stood at USD 70 billion.

"A trade war between China and India seems to be looming after the latter moved last Wednesday to impose anti-dumping duties on 93 products from China," the report said.

"If India really starts a trade war with China, of course China's economic interests will be hurt, but there will also be consequences for India," it said.

The report on trade comes as India and China have been locked in a tense military standoff in Doklam in the Sikkim sector.

India has protested the construction of a road by the Chinese military in the area claimed by its ally Bhutan, fearing it would allow Beijing to cut off India's access to its northeastern states.

The Global Times report warned that "given the tense bilateral trade ties, China may consider temporarily suspending investment or economic cooperation projects in India to ensure the security of these investments."

Another article in China Daily said boycotting Chinese goods would harm India.

Referring to the calls of boycott of Chinese products, it said the ongoing standoff in Doklam seems to have spilled over into bilateral exchanges.

"Suffice to say, calling for the boycotting of Chinese products and those related to Chinese investors is not just a fool's errand but also risks backfiring," it said. "It is the Indian economy that will suffer because of the boycott," it said.

Any attempt to keep Chinese cellphone companies at bay or shut down Chinese-invested factories will hurt the Indian economy and cost Indian jobs, it said.

Its silly to reduce trade due to political difference.

We should continue to have a healthy trade with china.

But a grassroot movement to boycott chinese goods is also a good idea.

Indian Establishment has tried to solve the border dispute with the Chinese and in reality it has been like that for more than a decade but the result is clearly visible which has resulted in more Nuclear and Missiles proliferation.

Next step is to improve and increase our capability and then again force a negotiated settlement.

Meanwhile let the trade continue with a good mix of anti dumping duties and social boycott of chinese goods.

I avoid crackers due to the noise and smoke pollution.

I get a few chakras, phulwari and phul chadi for my kid during diwali because she insists on it. Its difficult to find out if its from India or china.

Dude the idea is for me to profit, not some guy in Sivakasi or china. I too stay in India and my money too will stay in India.

The GoI should put anti dumping duties on chinese crackers. One would buy Indian crackers only if its cheaper than chinese cracker. We are literally burning money in this, so it makes sense to burn as little as possible.

Simple - Don't burst firecrackers - do the world a favour
2nd supplementry

Your kid's happiness is the world i know, but teach them to celebrate a clean diwali or holi or whatever festival without firecrackers! if you ingrain this thought early on, they will carry it onto the next generations.

that is the biggest profit - not anything of monetary value! i stop bursting crackers, its been 20 years... fact no one in my family does, and it torturous to wildlife and domestic animals also.

Its always better to find a balance than take extreme positions.

Your entitled your opinion as i am entitled to mine, I guess where i am coming from is that fireworks in total should be banned, considering the pollutions levels the ordinary citizens live with. The planet is already being chocked to death, its a small way to each citizen can partake to prevent it escalating further and having a better world to live with.
If that is an extreme step, then its a valid one!

Cheers - i would like to end this subject here to not derail the subject any further!

I do not advocate the philosophy of the "Brown Man's burden" where Hindus have to clean up the world by not bursting crackers while christians and muslims go around polluting the world.

Let them first end slaughtering of innocent animals to save the world, THEN we can discuss a ban on crackers.
