A 15-year-old boy was beheaded allegedly by three of his classmates who hanged the body on a tree on the bank of the Mutha river in the city of Pune, Maharashtra in western India, said police Tuesday.

According to his parents, Abhishek Ghorpade left home on May 5 on the pretext of going out to buy a cake for a birthday party of one of his friends.

Three of his friends who are believed to have nursed enmity with him, allegedly took Abhishek and chopped off his head with a sickle, threw it in the river and left the scene after hanging the body.

The incident came to light when some boys who had gone to play cricket saw the body of Abhishek hanging by a rope.

The police said that the boy had a quarrel with the suspects in school a few days back and the tiff apparently led to the crime.

After waiting for two days, the parents lodged a complaint with the police who have detained three minor boys in connection with the murder.

One of his classmates who has confessed to the crime has been arrested, said police.

well i don't think they deserve similar punishment. I am sorry for the child but these 3 kids are also KIDS like Abhishek. They must be prisoned for some years and educated behind the bars so that when they come out they can start a new/fresh life and never try to think of murdering someone

They have already done a big crime and this word will never go away from their lives anyway

Three schoolboys have been arrested in India on suspicion of murdering a classmate whose headless body was discovered tied to a tree.

The schoolboys have been remanded in custody or sent to secure accommodation

The 15-year-old victim Abhishek Ghorpade was found by a group of youngsters near a river in the western city of Pune, about 100 miles from Mumbai.

Police believe he may have been decapitated with a sickle and have yet to find his head which they believe may have been thrown into the river.

Ghorpade left home for a friend's birthday party last Wednesday evening and told his parents he would be home late.

He is thought to have argued with the three suspects at school.

Senior Police Inspector Deepak Sawant, in charge of the investigation, said the oldest suspect was taken to the crime scene on Saturday and apparently pointed out where Ghorpade was killed.

"He told (us) that after Abhishek was killed, his head was thrown in the river.

"Now we have started a search operation to find the head," he said.

The Indian Express newspaper said all three boys were arrested on suspicion of murder and have been remanded in police custody or sent to secure accommodation.

One person has been arrested and two suspects remanded to juvenile custody after a schoolboy was found beheaded in the Indian city of Pune, police say.

The body of 15-year-old Abhishek Ghorpade was found tied to a tree by children playing cricket near a river - his head has not yet been recovered.

Police say they believe the suspects quarrelled with the victim at school. The accused have not yet commented.

Correspondents say the cruelty of the crime has shocked residents of Pune.

The family of the victim went to the police after he was missing for two days. The crime reportedly occurred on 5 May.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Jalinder Supekar told the BBC that Abhishek was set upon by an 18-year-old and two other youths.

"The accused took the victim to this riverbed - where children often play cricket - and killed him," he said.

His body has been cremated by the family.

Further investigations are continuing.
