Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah Monday urged the government to take legal action against what he said the killing of innocent Bangladeshis by Indian border guards, reports UNB.

"We demand legal steps against Indian BSF who kill innocent people," said Rafiqul Islam Miah speaking at a human chain protest organised by Sammilito Ganotantrik Jote in front of the National Press Club.

He demanded compensation for the families of the killed.

Terming the killing by BSF 'a serious matter', he regretted that no steps are being taken by the government.

He urged the government to accept what he said the popular demand for restoration of the caretaker government (CG) to oversee the next general elections. Or it will lead to a mass movement, he warned.

Barrister Miah said Sheikh Hasina will be blamed if the situation turns grave on this issue.

He criticised Deputy Leader of the House Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury's remarks that Awami League will show how hard it can be if the opposition takes to the streets. "Why does not your government take action against corruption? And why the government is so hard against democratic movements waged to ensure peoples rights?"

He also alleged that government is conspiring to gag freedom of the press. "They will not exist by snatching press freedom," he said.

Terming the remand prayer against the journalists of the Daily Amar Desh as 'peculiar' he said, "All journalists along with the conscious people will get united and take stand against the government so that they can't snatch the freedom of the press."

"Otherwise democracy of our country will be destroyed," he said.

Chaired by Jote president Maj (retd) MM Mehbub Rahman, the programme was addressed by Juba Dal acting president Abdus Salam Azad, Swadhinata Forum president Abu Naser Md Rahmatullah, Swadesh Mancha president Mamunur Rashid Khan.
