BJP rejects Indo-Bangla land swap idea - The Times of India

GUWAHATI: Barely a few hours after chief minister Tarun Gogoi hinted that India might soon reach an agreement with Bangladesh to exchange land that are in adverse possession with the two neighbours, the BJP's Assam unit on Saturday said no portion of India's land should be handed over to Bangladesh at any cost. The saffron party claimed that such an action would amount to "compromising with India's sovereignty".

BJP general secretary Pradyut Bora said three areas in Karimganj and Dhubri districts were in dispute with Bangladesh's boundary. "Lathitila-Dumabari and Madanpur-Polatol in Karimganj district and Boroibari in Dhubri are the main areas that are disputed. These areas are shown in India's map. But handing over these areas to Bangladesh is not justified," he said.

BJP spokesperson Shantanu Bharali said handing over these areas to Bangladesh would be compromising with India's sovereignty.

Gogoi said if the situation demanded, claims over the adverse areas would be given up for the sake of resolving boundary differences between the two countries. The chief minister, who will accompany of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Bangladesh next month, said the decision of such an action would be taken by the Centre.

"The chief minister has taken the oath of protecting the integrity and sovereignty of the country. I want to ask whether giving up the adverse areas to Bangladesh would not amount to compromising with sovereignty of the country?", Bharali said.

Bora said, "Instead, Bangladesh should give land to India for the pressure Assam has been bearing because of unabated infiltration from the neighbouring country." At a time when there has been so solution to the problem of infiltration and update of the National Register for Citizens has been stopped, such an opinion on giving up claims over adverse areas was untenable, he added.

Accusing the state government of not doing much to solve the flood situation, the BJP leader said, "Nothing has been done to find a solution to the deluge because the government, it seems, loves a good flood. For years together, floods have been exploited to make money. The problem persisted and the people of the state continued to suffer."

BJP is crazy . For once congress is going to do something good and BJP wants them not to even do that .

Unnecessary hurdle .

This is just a mare border deal... I am just wondering what this moron and fear mongers will do when the whole assam and NE india will go out of their hand ....

N forgot to add that our naive bd government has handed over 262 acre of land to the bhartis which was not even part of the enclaves deal...... how much idiotic decision one can take going against the interest of the country.

I know tell me about it! Given the population density in Bangladesh 262 acres sounds a lot. Agree with you on that.

Good luck with that.

Do think of what you will lose once india decides to return the favour . You hardly have any territory anyway , once you lose that you will have to all jump in the bay of bengal.

so you have an eye on NE???

Bd gona take ne from india lol wet dreams i must say

Where you have seen BD in my comment...if it happens it will happen by the people of NE India themselves... Later if they want to remain as separate state or want to join bangladesh it will be up to them... But due to higher birth and growth rate bengali people will be majority in assam within nect couple of year... even now around 35% of the people of assam are Muslim.. and 40-45% are bengalis... n other ne states has a very tiny population... everything will depend what the bengali people of assam want... the way they are discriminated and tortured it is likely that they will want to join with Bangladesh as after all most of their ancestors are from present bangladesh when british took them over there for cultivation... n tripura also wanted to join BD in 1947... so if they want to join we can handle the reminder by giving arunachal pradesh to china... just rest in peace... n I guess you have already seen if the population of a region want to collectively what they can do.

Not only mine... but zinnah and even shaikh mujib had an eye on NE India atleast in assam. But bd will not do anything ... it is the people of assam and NE India will do themselves what is required to do considering the fact they are discriminated continuously in India.

Excuse me ? Why would we want to "get out of India's hand" when we ourselves are Indians? Or are you seriously suggesting that you're going to go for some sort of fancy undercover demographic warfare and take over our lands? That's fine: you can take NE and then the entire India will take you. The matter gets settled and one more brick gets added to our ultimate aim. Now don't ask me what it is... the Pakistanis know it better :azn:.

.
And all that time I was thinking India should capture Bangladesh, should be able to do it within 1 week.

.
Um, yeah other than having demographic wars over NE India, I think Bangladeshis should worry about an invasion by the Bay of Bengal. Apparently, the whole country will be under water by the end of this century. Better start to do something now. Don't understand why this issue is falling on deaf ears.

so you have an eye on NE???

@ "Akhe hote hai dekhne kelia, koi shak ???"

@ You remember, in 1947, the Rani of Tripura came to Dacca and stayed their for almost two weeks with the hope of joining with the then East Pakistan. But unfortunately Jinnah did not accept it as he was busy with the tribal people of NWFP.

@ About Assam !!! wait and see !!!, "Dekhte jao, age age hota hai kia ".

Well done for admitting the truth, I saw a documentary by BBC called planet earth, it stated if the water level increases by 2 cm, Bangladesh will be under water.

Bangladesh needs to invest in water defences then buying jets and guns.

But how would you explain your stand whether you're an Arab or a Bengali since you're between neither at the current situation? And how would you "give" Arunachal to China?

Not only mine... but zinnah and even shaikh mujib had an eye on NE India atleast in assam. But bd will not do anything ... it is the people of assam and NE India will do themselves what is required to do considering the fact they are discriminated continuously in India.

No thanks. We are not interested to join a country that can barely handle its own floods and population every year and is in an identity crisis between being Arabs or themselves. My own state alone is a thousand times better than entire of your place put together.

What discrimination are you talking about? Like how 98% of Chittagong Hill region population that was Buddhist during Subcontinent's independence vanished? Isn't it always a coincidence that how come wherever you guys are become majority, the rest always vanish in thin air??

Yeah ....if that's what you mean that's true. OTOH, we're thriving in India with a booming economy, unity in our diverse states.

Don't bleed for us and save yourself from drowning. As I said before, my entire state of Sikkim is far better off than your place. Let alone entire India combined.

Yes your name is nice... I am also for that... but we will remain as master the way we remained for 1000 year... just wait n see..;)

I don't recollect Bangladeshis ruling us for a 1,000 years . First save yourself from Bay of Bengal and Brahmaputra and then talk about "ruling us" for the thousand years. HAHAHAHA!. Oh and BTW, did they tell you what we (Bhutias and Gurkhas) did with your "Ghazis" half a millennia back when they fancied a walk in our region? I don't think they teach you that. Hint: Their remains were excellent compost material for our terrace cultivation of crops.

Tshering22,

I'd love to know where you got that "98%" figure from. There are indigenous peoples there. Take a visit to the CHT if you don't believe. Especially Rangamati.

Before anything, let me tell you some history about the people of CHT.

The Chakma and the Hmong tribes were some of the wealthiest ethnic groups in the CHT region.

Back in the Pakistan era, the government wanted to build a hydro-electric damn in the CHT region. This required the Chakma and Hmong owned lands for the project. They were promised compensation, but they never got it.

And even now, this dispute is still ongoing. Land ownership is a big issue even now. Their lands are often exploited by greedy and corrupt entrepreneurs. Even given that peace was achieved back in the late 90s during the AL administration. Currently, the same administration refuses to recognize them as indigenous tribes.

I went to Rangamati some months back for vacation. We sailed right under an underwater palace. The place is beautiful with an interesting history. And sadly, I feel that their indigenous culture, heritage and history are increasingly being thrown into oblivion in Bangladesh.

Seeing how things went about since 1971, Bengali nationalism didn't go well for some. Yes, even for non-Bengali Muslims.

But other than those, they live off pretty well in Bangladesh, and generally well-learned. But then, there are issues for which I really wish they were resolved permanently. Bangladeshi politicians are hardly committed to anything other than money.
