Surajkund (Haryana): The BJP Wednesday said it was not against economic reforms but indicated that it could scrap the UPA's decision to allow 51 percent foreign equity in multi-brand retail if it came to power.

"We are against FDI (foreign direct investment) in multi-brand retail per se as it is against India's interests," BJP chief spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad told IANS. He was briefing journalists after the party's national executive meet here.

"FDI in multi-brand retail is not in the interest of the farmers and the 1,000-year-old retail chain in the country. If we come to power, the consequences (on FDI) will follow," the BJP leader said.

Replying to a query that the party had promised 26 percent FDI in retail in its agenda for governance ahead of 2004 general elections, Prasad said: "(The year) 2004 is eight years old. Watch out for our manifesto."

But the party also claimed it was pro-reforms and had brought in FDI in media. 'We are for economic reforms and good governance. We brought FDI in media,' Prasad told IANS.

The BJP also claimed it had no differences with the Akali Dal in Punjab, which has said it would welcome FDI if the central government promised to safeguard traders. 'There are no differences with Akali Dal,' Prasad said.

BJP hints at scrapping FDI in multi-brand retail

Now where are all you "kongress" haters who think BJP will take India to the heights of greatness. Rest assured , it is just another party filled with goons which is opposing FDI and opposed nuclear deal just because they were signed when they were not in term. They hardly give a damn about what's good for the country. Btw , I am not a congress supporter and maintain no interest in politics.

.
bjp likes taking credit , not going to do anything.just tall talks for the retailer community votes in upcoming elections.

.
It would be Massive Stupidity on BJP's Part to do it . FDI are a million time better than FII's .

But again its a Populist rhetoric . I don't think it will do that .

. . .
NDA even tried for FDI in retail during their tenure.

. . . . . . .
It could well be that the damage is already done. Major global retailers have closely watching how this scenario unfolds. This comment , unless taken back will discourage them and they will think a thousand times before entering India.

Have you guys ever heard a more retarded statement ? " We are not against economic reforms , but we oppose FDI"
These type of retarded statements only come from those people who either have no clue what they are talking about , or from people who have no explanation for their actions. What else is the meaning of economic reforms ? When we talk about "reforms" , we refer to introducing free market and neo -classical /liberal policies. There is no second meaning of economic reforms.

The problem for BJP was the leader of walmarts meet rahul gandhi for fdi and just after few months why the governement had announced fdi in mutli-brand by 51%..
Even the MD of walmart once said that we don't want 51%, 49% is enough for them.. China is also allowing 49% investment in multibrand retail. Allowing 51% investment has its own problem, like the foreign companies will take control of the Indian retail market. Congress is saying that it will help farmers, how ?? Do the malls in big town only sells fruits and vegetable, the share of vegetables in their earning is very less. Also the biggest threat is the companies have their most of the manufacturing factories in China, it will further increase export of chinese goods. Some of points made by UPA about the infrastructure investment is good but still that limit has to be streched..

If NDA wins in 2014 they should take TMC too, together they can start scrapping all the reforms....
