Jana Gana Mana is written in highly Sanskritised (Tatsama - Tatsama are Sanskrit loanwords in modern Indic languages) Bengali (written in a literary register called Sadhu bhasa). It was written in 1911.
Vande Mataram was written in spontaneous session using words from Sanskrit and Bengali. It was written in 1882.
Now it is 2013.
National Anthem was widely accepted because it was Sanskrit ....... not because it was bengali.
Tatsama is nothing but Prakrit .....i.e. spoken Sanskrit. or sanskrit of the common man.
Same is true for Vande Mataram.
Sanskrit is more than 3000 years old ....maybe even 15,000 years old .........it was relevant in 1882 ....it remains relevant in 2013. No reason to assume it will not be relevant in the future too.
Yea sure, and it will soon overtake Hindi as the most widely spoken language in how many years? 10, 100, 1000.
