State minister for civil aviation & tourism, Mohammad Mahbub Ali has disclosed that Biman Bangladesh Airlines will add new routes to Toronto, Tokyo and Chennai from March.

The state minister also expressed hope for declaring positive news regarding the Dhaka-New York flight soon.

Mahbub Ali said Biman’s fleet is now modern and full of youth. With prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s earnest enthusiasm and efforts, 13 most technologically advanced airplanes have been installed recently.

"Soon two more Dash-8 will be added to the fleet," said state minister Mahbub.

Mahbub Ali said the new flights would ensure top notch service. He also warned the Biman officials against any negligence in serving the passengers.

Mentioning the COVID-19 pandemic situation, the state minister said, “Aviation and tourism has suffered the most in this pandemic. Biman is not secluded from the situation the entire world’s airlines are facing at the moment. By making the best use of Biman Bangladesh’s resources we are trying to reduce the operational cost and increase the returns for now."

As long as its profitable absolutely expand the network.... its tiny for the need of the diaspora and also for economic reasons.

I wonder if Toronto flight will be profitable. They should concentrate on euroasia destinations first

I ask all you guys one question. If I rent my shop to you and ask to open the shop once a week, do you think you can do business or your shop will be a losing concern?

I ask it because BIMAN was running only one flight a week to Tokyo. This resulted in heavy running expenses. The crew members who took the flight to Tokyo would stay in a Tokyo hotel for 7 nights and would receive additional payment for staying out of Dhaka. This is how BIMAN used to lose miney every day of the year.

There are other things that I did not mention. But, my question is will BIMAN again do the similar things and then ask the govt to compensate the loss with the tax money? It would be better not to re-start Tokyo flights unless BIMAN can run at least two weekly slots to Haneda or Narita airport.

Yes especially if they can find slots to Kunming, Beijing and Shenzhen among others.

Beijing can be an intermediate hop one day to Los Angeles, if they lobby China for third freedom rights (don't know if that's the term).

There are many West Coast Bangladeshi folks who take China Southern Airlines to Dhaka via Kunming (their hub). A lot of people also used to connect to Dhaka via Shenzhen (Dragonair ?).

Don't see why Biman cannot do it because their fleet is now newer than a lot of Asian carriers. They could also hire Chinese speaking flight attendants and revamp the menu to serve Chinese customers.

But this type of far-sighted thinking is not possible from Biman route-planners.

A bunch of bhatey-mora uneducated goru-gadha if you ask me, appointed on nepotism, not talent.

There are so many NRBs in USA and Canada. As par Biman Dhaka - Toronto route will be a 14 hour direct flight which will reduce transit time significantly.
An airline company is not supposed to serve only the NRBs. There are many other nationalities that may fly to European destinations or to, say, Bangkok or Singapore. So, the airlines may count on this kind of passengers as well.

However, I will emphasize again the need for at least two weekly flights from Toronto or any other endpoint. One weekly flight gives the passengers very little choice.

Stopping in UK defeats the purpose of a direct flight, i would rather fly Qatar. The goal is to make it to Dhaka in 15 hrs or less, so that people can visit bd multiple times a year during short breaks like Thanksgiving or other long weekends instead of visiting once a year in December .
