Bilawal, Shehbaz, Fazlur Rehman’s nomination papers approved as ECP concludes scrutiny
-Imran Khan, Khaqan Abbasi, Ayesha Gulalai, Mehtab Abbasi’s nomination papers for NA-53 rejected
ISLAMABAD: The nomination papers of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif for different constituencies were accepted as the ECP concluded the scrutiny process of nomination papers on Tuesday.
Bilawal’s nominations papers for NA-246 Karachi have been accepted along with the nomination papers of Shehbaz and his son, Hamza Shehbaz, for NA-132 Lahore.
Moreover, PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz’s candidacy for PP-173 has been approved. On Monday, returning officer (RO) Asif Bashir had cleared the way for Maryam to contest for Lahore’s NA-125 constituency after dismissing all objections raised during scrutiny of her nomination papers.
Nominations papers of Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP) leader Arshad Vohra for NA-254 Karachi and NA-255 Karachi have also been approved, along with nomination papers of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s for NA-38 Dera Ismail Khan.
Former Punjab law minister Rana Sanaullah’s candidacy for NA-106 Faisalabad has also been approved, while former speaker Balochistan Assembly Raheela Hameed Khan Durrani has been allowed to contest from NA-265, and former federal minister for religious affairs Hamid Saeed Kazmi will be contesting from NA-175 Liaquatpur.
Other candidates whose nomination papers have been approved include new member of Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) Zulfiqar Mirza from PS-74 Badin, former interior minister Ahsan Iqbal from his hometown constituency of NA-78 Narowal, former Punjab law minister Rana Sanaullah from NA-106 Faisalabad, and estranged Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Ayesha Gulalai from NA-231 Sajawal.
Senior politician Javed Hashmi’s candidature for NA-155 Multan has also been approved, while former president Pervez Musharraf’s nomination papers for NA-1 Chitral have been dismissed.
Moreover, the nomination papers of political bigwigs including PTI Chairman Imran Khan, former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, chairperson of PTI-G Ayesha Gulalai and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Mehtab Abbasi, for Islamabad’s NA-53 constituency were rejected.
According to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the returning officer dismissed the political leaders’ nomination papers over violation of Section N of the affidavit. The RO maintained that politicians did not fill the affidavit as per its requirements.
Imran Khan’s nomination papers for NA-53 were challenged by Pakistan Justice and Democratic Party candidate Abdul Wahab Baloch earlier this month.
Earlier in the day, his counsel Babar Awan had presented his arguments before the returning officer in reply to Baloch’s claimed that Imran is not qualified to contest under articles 62 and 63 on the issue of Sita White and her daughter Tyrian.
In his reply, Awan stated that they had rejected the objections against his client seven times in the written reply submitted to the ECP a day ago.
He further added that each of the objections was fabricated and that the documentation submitted in the form of photocopies with the intention to ‘incriminate’ Imran is a crime of forgery.
“The petitioner was referring to a decision by a United States (US) court, but where is the name of the child’s father?” Awan questioned.
“Moreover, the Supreme Court (SC) has declared Imran ‘Sadiq’ and ‘Ameen’,” he added.
The verdict was temporarily reserved and given against the PTI leader soon afterwards.
Additionally, Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) stalwart Farooq Sattar also suffered a setback after his nomination papers for NA-245 Karachi were rejected.
RO Ahsan Khan said that Sattar’s candidature for NA-245 had been rejected because he is an absconder in two cases and hid this fact by not mentioning it in his nomination papers.
According to a police report, Farooq Sattar failed to appear before the court in two cases registered under the Sindh Sound System (Regulation) Act, 2015 at Soldier Bazaar police station.
During the hearing on objections, Sattar’s counsel had remarked that his client was unaware of the two cases.
Sattar has submitted nomination papers from three constituencies in Karachi NA-241, 245 and 247 to contest the general election scheduled to be held on July 25.
The nomination papers of former JUI Sindh chief Asadullah Bhutto were also rejected for NA-242 Karachi as his name is reportedly on a bank defaulters’ list. Speaking to the media, Bhutto shared that he will challenge his dismissal. “I am not a defaulter. The bank has made some mistake,” he remarked.
Scrutiny of nomination papers for the upcoming polls was concluded on Tuesday by the ECP.
21,482 nomination papers were filed for the upcoming general elections, according to the commission.
6,063 candidates would contest for 342 seats of the National Assembly while 15,419 persons would contest for provincial assemblies.
Appeals can be filed with ECP against the acceptance or rejection of nomination papers by June 22.
The decision of such appeals would be made by the ECP by June 27 following which final list of the candidates will be issued on June 28.ons raised against Imran’s candidacy are allegations.
General elections are scheduled to be held on July 25.
